You can't help noticing this highlight in the square, next to the 'Black Tower'. The renaissance exterior is strikingly beautiful and kept in perfect state; the entrance hall is impressive too.

This is where the city police head quarters is located, the Mayor and city offices. They also have weddings here on Saturdays. I believe our wedding was the only double wedding of its history.

Apart from the obvious things like how beautiful the building is, the scrafitto on the walls there is a plaque to remember 21st August 1968, the day Russian army occupied the CR and did not leave until 30th June 1991. In 1945 Klatovy were liberated by the American army and in 1968 they were occupied by the Russian army.

Founded in the Middle Ages on a regular ground-plan and with a charakteristic silhouette. During years 1547-1559, a new town-hall was built up at the top of the main square, with a high (81 metres), slim tower. The town-hall building, reconstructed in neo-Renaissance style in the years 1923-1925. At this time there is a municipal office.

The local language is very difficult, so not certain what the all the notices meant. The local information office further along on the same side has a number of English brochures with explanations.

The architecture is great by itself. But the local tourist information inside the town hall is hugely useful to all visitors. English, German and Czech language is on most literature. English is frequently spoken by staff as well

Klatovy was one of our favourite little towns in the Czech Republic. It has a beautiful town square and lots of lovely old buildings nearby. And hardly any tourists!
We picked up a brochure at the Catacombs which gave us all the information on places to visit in Klatovy - all within easy walking distance. Give yourself a good couple of hours.
We didn't go inside the Town Hall building but enjoyed seeing its facade.
There are a number of cafes and restaurants in the square but hard to find a non-smoking one. The one next to the apothecary is non-smoking and friendly.

Town hall adjoining the BlackTower, it also houses the tourism information centre. After a fire in 1920 rebuilt in Neorenaissance style. Simultanious created with the the black tower in 1550. Century. The magnificent building was proof of the wealth of the city and its inhabitants. Access to the black tower where once stood the Castle, was from the first floor of City Hall. The building was rebuilt several times, most recently 1923-1925 in the neo-Renaissance style (architect Josef Fanta).
