The long eared bear needs to be re-homed or the conditions of the enclosure needs a serious upgrade. So sad to see beautiful wildlife kept in such a state. These animals are endangered and are protected under CITES.

This castle really worth to visit.
They offer 5 routes, 3 of which I would recommend:
1) Private apartments of Franz Ferdinand d'Este family (3rd tour)
2) Apartments of the south wing of the castle (1st tour)
3) Apartments of the north wing of the castle (2nd tour)
The only problem is, that these routes (especially Private apartments) are often fully booked, so it is necessary to buy tickets on-line ahead!

Easy day trip by train (40 mins) from Prague. We walked to the castle from Benešov u Prahy station ( it’s a 20 minute fairly flat walk) without any problems. The castle grounds are magical with sprawling gardens and a large lake (albeit very green) which is great for picnics. Ideally do try and avoid the bear in the pit and the birds of prey/owls tethered onto very short pieces of rope…
We took a tour of the armoury rooms which hold a very impressive collection. There were no tours in English ( no clue why not as there was meant to be!) so we tagged onto a Czech one with English audio-guides. The tour is 60 minutes and just about the right length to hold the attention of two fidgety teens.
Finally, take your own food as there’s not much on offer at the castle and stay away from the over-priced souvenir shops!

The castle itself is very pretty and so is the surrounding area, what ruined the experience for me was the exposition and especially the male guide. He had many sexist remarks and was overall uninteresting also said things that just weren't true about other cultures, considering how expensive and long it was, I advise you to stay away from expositions and just enjoy the beautiful gardens of this castle.

A trip back in time to the castle with a group of colleagues from a conference held nearby. Our tour guides were knowledgeable and friendly, and we all enjoyed the experience. The walk up to the castle from the parking lots is challenging for people with balance issues or unused to walking short distances, and the paving was intermittent. However, with some help from friends, it was doable and the resulting tour was very enjoyable. Rooms in the castle have been preserved as they would have appeared 100+ years ago, before WWI, when the Hapsburg family was still powerful and life for the privileged few was full of entitlements and grandeur. While the castle tour is an hour or so, there's much to do on the surrounding estate grounds, including a private zoo, a lake, and a few pub/restaurants. We were there in the off-season, and I could see how a family might spend the whole day in nice summer weather. Photos were prohibited inside the castle.

Being a history buff, I looked forward to learning about the Arch Duke and his ties to the beginning of World War I. The castle is authentic and one notices this right from the beginning. The tour takes a visitor from room to room. Unfortunately our English speaking guide was a real novice. I can’t believe this older gentleman with a strange sense of humor was a regular guide. I had hope to hear some interesting background narratives regarding the Archduke, the castle and the start of World War I. All this guide did was take us from room to room, remind people to stay on the carpet and try to make jokes with the kids on the tour. He basically would take us from room to room and say - this is the bedroom, this is the bath room, etc. Took away very little from this tour.
How disappointing. This could have been a great experience.

Yes, but you have to walk a bit to the castle proper. It is a nice walk in the woods or through the castle gardens. It is uphill though. Four year olds can easily walk it.

No problem with parking, well, I do not know in high season. The train which can take you up there we did not see until we were back after visiting. A stop slightly up the hill was not very informative unless you speak Czech. The walk is up hill to the castle which is hard. In the end well worth it as very interesting castle. but they are not well prepared for non speaking Czech.

It looks like it's not open to the public in May or June. Is this correct?

How long does it take to visit the castle? If we are a group of 20 people do we need to make a reservation?

Sorry for late reply. No, you don't need to. It took us half and hour to wait for a tour. Of course if you want to make sure that it will be place for you try to call. I hope someone speak English in there. Just pay attention that they close kinda early. Hope you enjoyed your trip!

Is it permissible to take pictures in Konopiste? Someone here said it is not, but the castle site does not indicate this.
