About
Woodbridge sits on the banks of the Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River), one of the most culturally significant places in Whadjuk Noongar Country. It has sustained the Whadjuk people for tens of thousands of years and is known as Mandoon, or Munda’s Country. Then in 1829, the newly appointed Governor of the Swan River colony, Captain James Stirling, selected 1620 hectares of this land for a property that he named ‘Woodbridge’, as it reminded him of the area around the home of his wife’s family in Surrey, England. Stirling left the Swan River Colony at the end of his term as Governor in 1839 and leased Woodbridge to various tenants until 1883, when it was purchased by agricultural entrepreneur, parliamentarian and part-owner of The West Australian newspaper Charles Harper and his wife Fanny. They commenced the construction of a large family home once considered “the handsomest private residence that has yet been erected in the colony.” Woodbridge also supported extensive orchards and a com

Been to WA many times, but this is the 1st time coming to Woodbridge WA. Just a 35 minute drive away from Booragoon. Well worth the time spent. Unfortunately it was closed on the day we decide to visit the place. But the beautiful surroundings makes up for the that disappointment.

Visited on Monday 2nd December. It was closed for major renovations, we were very disappointed we could not see inside. Café and Riverside Park are still open. Check NT website for opening times before going there.

Visited this beautiful old place recently during a drive through Woodbridge. The small fee to do the tour is well worth it ($8 adults, $5 for kids over 5 years). If you are a history buff like me you will very much enjoy the story that it has to tell. The place has been beautifully decorated with anitque furniture providing you with the basis for what it might’ve been like to call it home during it’s heyday. Every visitor helps to maintain and continually restore this unique and special bit of WA history, it’s just a shame it’s not more widely advertised or promoted, I dare say many (even those in the local area) don’t even know it exists.

Well worth a visit.
I’d suggest you go on a “normal” weekend and pay the small entry fee. We unintentionally arrived on a free entry day which was in conjunction with the historical rose society. It was a lovely atmosphere and it was Free, but too crowded for our liking. The history would soak in a lot deeper without other people leaning over your shoulder to look into the exhibits.
There are some amazing antiques including furniture, working clocks, children’s toys, table settings and artwork. You really could spend hours just looking (from behind the ropes).
I’d love to see the cellar and top 2 stories (both closed to public). I believe the cellar is used for storage and the top 2 stories are merely lookouts. Probably not suitable areas for mass groups, but maybe a small group tour option would be nice.
We’ll definitely come back for a more in-depth visit, and will bring my parents as well.
Thank you for the unexpected free entry.

More attention to detail is needed with the artefacts actually suiting the era of the house. There is even a spelling mistake on the brochure given out to schools.

I was also extremely disappointed with the attitude of the volunteers who were sorting the linen. They were quite rude.

This is a very interesting house which dates back to Govenor Stirling.

The house has lots of stories from being occupied by the Harper family and was a school and woman's refuge.

The house is situated above the banks of the Swan River. There is a cafe here so you can get a coffee as well. I think entry was about $8 for adults.

We were welcomed by two lovely ladies who were obviously passionate about the house and it's history. One lady gave us a very informative briefing on the history of the house and it's owners. The house itself is a real gem and well worth a visit. It gives a real insight into the lifestyle of the well-to-do of the late 19th century.
