Took a tour to Hole in the Rock in the afternoon. Very easy to navigate but pretty. The stroll along the beach promenade is very attractive, and by the second street you've seen almost everything. The history of the place is interesting, from the "hellhole of the Pacific" to the brief capital of New Zealand. Three hours are enough with a visit to the cafe.

Picturesque beach, short but filled with life. Waterside restaurants, good swimming and there is a raft for diving Off for older children. You can catch the ferry from Paihia and walk off the wharf straight on to this very lovely beach

You can walk or sit at this location, it’s just nice to sit and watch the world go by, it can also be fairly sheltered.

A nice beach with an easy path to stroll along. The beach is small shingle but still not too hard on your feet.

Walking along the seafront from the wharf is a must. Lots of seats to rest or just relax and enjoy the views. Lots of boats drifting by. Especially beautiful on sunny days. The beach is covered in little stones not sand so shoes might be needed on a walk to the waters edge if you have sensitive feet.

We walked here every day just enjoying the quiet and changing coast. Some beautiful homes with frontline views. Most looked empty so could be holiday rentals?
Everything spotless, no garbage. Just like the rest of Russell.

We could have spent the day sitting on one of the benches under the shade watching the boats in the bay and the people in the water. Plenty of activity with excellent icecream and cafes available nearby

This is historic Russell at its best - the wharf, the boats resting in the harbour the old cottages bordering the narrow road - very atmospheric and full of history.
