Definitely worth visiting. Great to learn some history of the area during the war. There is no shortage of medical equipment on display and the underground mine itself is also extremely interesting and displayed in a very easy way to understand as was the added commentary by our guide. The underground hospital was great to escape the heat from outside. Great place to visit if you have an hour or more.…

Thank you for your four star review. It’s amazing how cool it is in the tunnels. No wonder why the nurses would sleep there on hot summer nights.

Our Biziskill project which accommodates 10 paid trainees at the RedDoor Multiskill Centre in Cloncurry, currently has available resources to assist non-profitable charities. We are able to provide administration, data entry, cataloging, create Facebook sites, websites and perform other business functions at no cost. Recently the Biziskill team had completed administration task for the Underground Hospital and Museum. In return they offered a guided tour of the Underground Hospital and Museum. On arrival at the Museum we were met by one of the volunteers, Erica who guided the Trainees throughout the facility. She shared some very interesting historical information regarding the build of the Underground Hospital and Museum. It was very informative and all the Trainees thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity given by Erica.…

With the bombing of Darwin in early 1942 and the destruction of its hospital, concern was raised of the vulnerability of Mt Isa Hospital in the event of a Japanese air raid. The mine supervisor loaned equipment and miners their spare time to dig three tunnels into an adjacent hill. Completed quickly, the tunnels were never used for surgical procedures as there were never any air raids. Our tour group was small and our guide - Roxana - was full of information. The museum suffers from being run by committee and volunteers, whose heart is big but curation skills small, so their is to much repetition and clutter. That said, it’s an interesting place and a unique slice of Mt Isa's history. An example of a tent house, used extensively for accommodation, is well presented with lots of personal touches. Staff were very generous with their time which made our visit all the more pleasant and certainly more interesting.…

Thank you for your review Peter. We couldn’t agree with your review more. Our volunteers are passionate and love chatting with our guests. We have some very exciting work happening and have had Museums and Galleries Queensland working with us this week on improving the museum. I hope that you make it back to the Mount Isa Underground Hospital and Museum in the coming years to see the changes.

They close at two o'clock so don't go there late in the afternoon like we did. Looks to be very interesting going by the photos on Google.
