Visited Nov 7th. Wonderful tour

Big thanks to the guides for making our tour of the Fort very interesting. The tour not only encapsulated Newcastle's military past, but also it's foundations as an emerging city. Our guide, Rick, really set the scene. The tunnel tour allowed a hand-on experience with the guns, and an insight into the harsh working conditions of the soldiers stationed at the Fort throughout every era. My son absolutely loved the tunnels and 1 o'clock cannon fire. I loved walking the grounds, touring the tunnels and the exhibitions. Thankyou very much ☺️

An interesting and informative visit with plenty of enthusiastic volunteers on hand to answer any unresolved questions. Free entry and daily gun firing at 1 pm. Plenty of information about the history of the fort and its activities combined with some of the best views in Newcastle. What’s not to like. Allow 1 to 2 hours.

A tremendous tour

The fort and the history surrounding and involving the fort which was presented by our tour guide was compelling. The four of us had never visited before and we all were surprised that the foundation of the city was integral to early coal extraction about the site of the fort .
This is a great site to visit, the tour offers more substance to the visit, but even without it the fort is an experience to enjoy.

Historical must!

This was within walking distance of our hotel so we venture across and did the tunnels tour! Our guides knowledge was phenomenal and he was answered everyone's questions!

If you get there at the right time they blast a cannon which is such a blast for the kids!

Fascinating glimpse into Newcastle's history
May 2021
A tour of the Fort came highly recommended and it didn't disappoint. Our guide Steve was excellent providing interesting information about both the history of Newcastle and of the fort. His passion for the Fort made this an outstanding tour and one that I would highly recommend when visiting Newcastle.

Fort Scratchley and its tunnel system
May 2021
Great tour with our guide Ian. He was informative and had many insights into the military and non military Newcastle history as we toured the tunnels in Fort Scratchley. A great way to understand the impact exploration and use of the land had on the local population and the importance of the Fort in the defence of Australia. If you are there at 1pm on the days the time signal cannon is fired it is worth doing the 11.30 tour and hanging about to hear the cannon.

Hidden history

The Fort Scratchley tour is a fascinating insight into the late 19th century and our military past. The tour guide was full of interesting details not only about the fort an the guns but also the precautions necessary for the safety of the soldiers stationed there. Definitely worth a visit!

Nice experience. Very interesting. A little uncomfortable on a windy day but that should stop you visiting.
