I would highly suggest people do this. Yes of course its scary but thats what makes it fun and worth while. If your scared I maybe suggest going in a group. Overall it was really good and I would definitely recommend this for members of...More
Had a fantastic time rafting on the Shotover river. The guides were all fantastic, they run a well oiled operation and very interactive and chatty with us. The rapids were great and the scenary was lovely. Would definitely do it again.
Such a fun half day activity, come rain or shine! It honestly doesn’t matter if it’s raining because well, you’re gonna be white water rafting so you WILL get wet. The 40 minute journey to get to the river is stunning itself, and will take...More
We are not experienced white water rafters. The day we went with the group, the rapids were running category 4-5. Not asking (our mistake) we thought the scale went to 10. Nope. It goes to 5 (6 actually, but you can't ride those). So we...More

I was traveling with rafting novices so we booked the Kawarau. Our trip did not make and we had the option of switching to the Shotover. We were so glad that we switched. The Shotover wasn't that scary for the novices and they had a blast. We would likely have been bored and disappointed with the smaller rapids on the Kawarau. As long as your niece is good at following instructions and has a sense of adventure, you should go for the Shotover.

Hi Carol, Thanks for getting in touch, I think you have already answered your own question unfortunately, active paddling with a bad neck is not advised. You will need to paddle and in certain areas paddle hard (on either river) as per instructions of the raft guide. Shoulder muscles are obviously directly attached to your neck.
Although the Kawarau River is a lower grade at 2-3 rather than the 4-5 for the Shotover River, the Kawarau River can kick upto a grade 4 in high water. When it'll likely be a grade 4 we do let customers know incase they change their mind with the higher grade. As you have about a month before you arrive maybe see a physio (if you are not already) to have a look at your neck, get their advice and fix you up! Get better soon and maybe see you soon after you've got clearance from your physio/doctor.
