An excellent journey from Christchurch to Greymouth. We did this as a means to pickup the hire car. Super views, comfortable seats and decent food and drink. Would not recommend doing highways in one go.

Possibly avoid if travelling in a group as well. There is something utterly sad and depressing to sit in an uncomfortable train seat surrounded by tourists with cameras trying to get a glimpse of amazing landscapes that disappear as quickly as they appear. When you...More

Great experience. Train very clean with heaps of leg room. Food for sale fresh and reasonably priced. Observation car with open air viewing a real hit.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery. This is one train journey which is worth the trip. Not only can you enjoy the scenery, but you get grand photo opportunities galore. And in between your hours you can enjoy a snack from the cafeteria. Or...More

I guess we had high expectations after our train journeys in Switzerland and Canada. It was okay but does not meet the hype.

We arrived in Christchurch early in the morning and took a cab to the station. The train arrived on time and we handed our luggage in to the coach in front. The train was so comfortable and clean and the large windows enabled us to...More

There isn't much to do in Greymouth itself but people use it as a pad to go up and down the West Coast.
