Welcome to a place of art and ideas. Expect the unexpected at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, showing provocative contemporary art since 1970. Exhibitions change out every four months so there's always something new to experience. The new addition to the Govett-Brewster, the Len Lye Centre, showcases New Zealand-born artist Len Lye's ideas and artworks in film, sculpture, painting and photography. It also shows exhibitions of work by artists whose practice is related to Len Lye's. The boutique 60-seat cinema screens Lye's ground-breaking films, a selection of international film festivals, experimental, arthouse and cult movies, as well as a New Zealand cinema, symposia and lectures. Open seven days, 10am – 5pm (+ Thursday night films), the entrance to the art gallery is on Queen St. Entry's by donation. Be sure to save some time for the wonderful Govett-Brewster Shop where you can treat yourself or find unique gifts of books, stationery, homewares, jewellery and cool kids’ stuff.

We had planned a trip to New Plymouth with the Govett-Brewster being the focal point of our trip. The architecture is superb and in itself worth the visit. To say I was underwhelmed is mild. The spaces seemed empty, the Len Lye part of the...More

Nice location but the exhibits were hard to fathom out. A great imagination may have helped, but the interpretation of the artists could be somewhat different. Maybe the should cater and appeal to more visitors rather than being a drain on the rate payers of...More

There are hardly any Len Lye exhibits (on loan to other museums?). The other exhibition was just a bit weird for me and the few things to look at were lost in the huge gallery space making it seem sterile and boring. Even though its...More

I try to visit each time I’m in New Plymouth. Very disappointing to see that much of Len Lye’s artwork is in storage. The space has been designed to showcase his large kinetic artwork. I hope with the new curator they bring back the pieces...More

Great staff who are there to guide you through the amazing selections. Always great interactive activities for young kids to adults. A movie to watch and something to learn. All inside a truly beautiful building.

The title says it all. Its an amazing building to look at. Thats about where it ends. Theres a real lack of exhibits and basically a totally boring experience. The fact that its free entry helps, you would not want to pay to enter. There...More

Arrived in time for a guided tour of Len Lye and gallery. Very interesting and informative talk. Need the tour to understand the concepts behind the work. Had lunch at adjoining restaurant delicious.

Visited with two 12 year olds and quite underwhelmed. Got told off for touching what seemed to be an interactive ‘touchy’ piece of weird art which was sitting on a low table. I feel they would have been telling people/kids off all day for touching...More
