The excavation of the buried village was fairly interesting but realistically there was not that much to see. The short walk to the waterfall was quite enjoyable however. We joined a tour which was not exactly necessary as pretty much everything was self-explanatory.

The excavations of the village buried by the 1886 eruption is very interesting, interpretation boards are good as is the museum and waterfall walk. Well worth the money. The café looked really nice but unfortunately we had just had a coffee before we arrived.

This didn't take a long time to go through, but we enjoyed walking along the beautiful paths and seeing the river and waterfalls while learning about the tragedy of the volcanic eruption that buried the village. We also enjoyed a nice lunch at the cafe...More

You are quite right in that the waterfall track went a lot further down years ago. However, in the mid 1990's part of the rock face down there collapsed and the track had to be rebuilt. I think there has been some mis-interpretation regarding the...More

The buried village itself and its museum is informative and sad at the same time. The artifacts and excavations are educational and beautifully preserved. The grounds are well kept but for me the waterfalls were the highlight. These require a level of fitness and dexterity...More
