- Lydia S1 contributionWaitangi Treaty Grounds should 100% be on your bucket list!Waitangi Treaty Grounds should 100% be on your bucket list. Our experience actually began in the Cafe whilst we waited for our escorted tour to begin. The cafe staff were very friendly and enjoyed a delicious brekkie before starting our tour. I've forgotten the Gentlemen's name, but our tour guide of the grounds was wonderful. Extremely knowledgeable and authentic and passionate about the Historic event that took place on the grounds. Afterwards we experienced the cultural performance. This was moving and very powerful (bought me to tears) I feel very honoured to of witnessed this and thanks go to the performers for giving my friend and I what I call a memorable travel memory ❤️ Thank You!Visited October 2023Traveled with friendsWritten October 16, 2023
- Helen W15 contributionsA must for any visitor to Aotearea NZ - Admission + cultural concert (tour included)This is such an important introduction to understanding New Zealand history. We were so pleased to be here on our 3rd day in the country. The tour guide was brilliant and what he told us was so interesting. The singers had beautiful voices and the Māori welcome moved me to tears it was so impactful. The whole site and the many exhibits are carefully and attractively presented. Incredible what we learnt in the military service exhibit. The sacrifices of Māori people in wars will stay with us forever. The Treaty Grounds is in a stunning location a very pleasant 20 minute walk from Paihia jetty. Great views from here over to Russell and all around. A must for any visitor to Aotearoa New Zealand.Visited October 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten October 20, 2023
- MereteMadsenAssens, Denmark225 contributionsA place of interestThis being a Very important place for New Zealanders, we thought we should go. I do agree that the Price is extremely high! But if you are a person who are interested in history, you ought to go. As English is not our primary language, we are Scandinavians, some of the displays were too “heavy” for us…also we found some rooms Way too dark….. Still I think it is a place you should visit…to get a little back groundVisited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten December 22, 2023
- DanniBrisbane, Australia5 contributionsStanding on hollowed groundThis is an experience well worth taking the time to explore. You will need to allow some time though for exploring. The tour very informative and well told by engaging guide. The museum’s well worth spending more time absorbing history. Tour takes 50 minutes and cultural experience 30 mins. Grounds well maintained and views spectacular. Cafe on ground though we were to late to sample fare. I wouldn’t go if raining though as tour mainly outside. Overall great experience for the whole family.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 2, 2024
- SKB2023Whangarei, New Zealand42 contributionsSo goodI’ve been to the waitangi treaty grounds once before (2020) and thought it was amazing, I decided to bring the kids back for a visit today and was impressed We did the tour, our guide Hemi was great, very knowledgeable and kept his talk interesting. The grounds are beautiful, such a lovely view and the museum is really well presented. I could easily spend all day here exploring if I was on my own. The kids (6 and 8) made use of the clipboard and questions and answer sheet with drawings to do which helped keep them engaged. The were rewarded at the end for completing it with a couple of lollies and a certificate which they were proud of. I think it’s such an important place for all New Zealanders to visit and a great experience for anyone from overseasVisited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten January 10, 2024
- Stacey L2 contributionsImportant historyOverall we felt that the museums and the Māori cultural performance were fantastic. The tour guide we had though focused almost exclusively on the colonial aspect of the history and we felt it really missed the balance of the Māori perspective. Highly recommend visiting the grounds overall.Visited January 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten January 24, 2024
- FranckinLeidenLeiden, The Netherlands79 contributionsMy top visit so far in NZ NI !!!A must visit place if you want to learn something about the history of New Zealand. Heemi our very positive guide told us all about the history of his ancestors. Thank you Heemi for sharing all your knowledge with us. On this grounds the Treaty between the British crown and a large group of Maori tribes was signed. A waka was performed in the sacred Maori house. A great performance to watch! For the rest a beautiful collection of plants and trees. I very much enjoyed watching this all.Visited February 2024Traveled soloWritten January 31, 2024

My Mum and I came to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to find out more about our ancestors. Shane was an excellent tour guide through the grounds for our guided tour, the group who did the cultural performance were spectacular both after the tour and during the night time Hangi and Concert experience.
The Hangi was so great, sitting next to all different people from all over the world learning about this one culture and sharing stories. The team who prepared the Hangi and did all the greetings and blessings were so wonderful and welcoming.
I would definitely come back to do this experience again one day.

The guide had a nice relaxed style with a typical Mauri droll sense of humour.
The concert was clearly aimed at the tourist but still had real feeling.
We had little understanding of the issues surrounding the original treaty but have a much better understanding now.
Having a ticketing system which allows you to go in free next day too is a nice touch - we popped back to to check on some facts the following day.

The experience was even better than I imagined. It was my first time to visit Waitangi. The Grounds are extensive with many things to see. When we arrived, there was a tour about to begin that was included in admission. We got to see a family-friendly cultural performance then a walking tour on the grounds. The museum was extensive and we ran out of time but the admission is for two days so we returned the next day to finish the museum. The gift shop was interesting too. The staff members were all very helpful and the views from the grounds are lovely.

It is very interesting to see the development of the country from the early days through the arrival of European explorers and then settlers. The Treaty signed here was a foundation which was good but still controversial for some.
The museum is very interesting, and the grounds are great to walk around. The cultural show as similar to others we had seen but worthwhile nevertheless.
It is quite expensive for non New Zealanders, but I suppose that's not too unreasonable!

All exhibits were exceptionally well presented. The Maori performance was First Class. Going home well informed and better understanding of the process of the Treaty. Thank you. Marley at reception was so helpful and set the tone of the whole experience.

A well-maintained and informative area. The musuem covers off a comprehensive summary of the treaties, their effects and the results. I learned a significant amount (as a non-NZer). The path through the museum takes an orderly, chronological journey through the history with some very good movie snippets along the way. There is a good boardwalk and outlooks over the bay. There is also the original Resident's residence and Maori meeting hall. You may also get a traditional welcome if you time it right.
Cost is NZD60 per person for non-NZers and all proceeds go to maintenance - worth the money. Easy walking but a bit of distance to cover.

Kia Ora,
Are we allowed to bring in outside kai for children. Also are there any specific eating areas?
I need to use an electric scooter to move around. Will Waitangi Treaty Grounds be suitable for me to visit?

The Treaty grounds have paved roads and well formed paths so mobility scooters etc are catered for.
How far do you need to walk, and is it easy foor peple with some mobility problems

Quite a lot of walking but certainly friendly to people with disabilities. Lots of seats.
Most important it is worth the effort: a world class historical site in a beautiful place

Can you still walk around the grounds for free without going to the museum or doing the tours or seeing a traditional welcome and dance? I have done all before and just want to stroll the grounds.

Do the shows and tours get fully booked or can they accommodate as many people as arrive at all times of the day? We are planning to visit 5th November.

I would contact them directly. I loved this place. I arrived at 3:30pm and took me about an hour to look through the museum. I was invited back the next morning to do the walking tour and it was fabulous and so informative. Given it was off season there was no dinner but the free walking tour (with a hilarious guide) finishes with a quality performance. You need to spend a whole morning or afternoon here. The entry cost is $50 NZD but worth it. Also, the entry fee is their only means of funding. The entry is inviting and the grounds are beautiful. The cafe was great too. I finished the walking tour in plenty of time to make the 1:30pm 'Hole in the Rock cruise' at Paihia. I was pleasantly surprised by this place and count it as one of the highlights on my two week trip.

Hi. Yes I’m sure u can just visit the museum but to be honest it really would be a shame not to see it all and take the tour, personally I’d look at reducing time elsewhere just to do thiis...
