An interesting reminder of Maori folklore. It is in the Sunken Gardens next to the sea. Probably not worth a special visit but good to see when strolling through the gardens to the fountain.

There she sits - Pania of the Reef. Our historic - and beautiful bronze statue by our Art Deco fountain. She is easy to love.

Pania is a beautiful statue with an interesting history which is engraved below. From any angle she is great to photograph and is situated in such a beautiful garden area opposite a beautiful fountain. Great spot for picnics as well.

Everyone needs a photo with Pania. I remember seeing a photo of my mother as a girl with the statue. A little history while you are walking Marine Parade.

We looked at all the touristy things to do on the beach side of Marine Parade. I came to Napier as it had been over 40 years since I had been last and wanted to see Pania again. The write up underneath does not match...More

If you are in the area, yes, you should take a look at this statue. It is like the "Little Mermaid" in Copenhagen in that if people know you have been to Napier and have been, they will question if you have seen her. Locals...More
