We came here for the first time the weekend just gone as the weather was beautiful and loved our visit! We were in Devonport for about 4 hours and that included the walk to this site and visiting the site. We didn't get lunch over...More

North Head is an old military installation, with old guns and several tunnels and underground chambers to explore. As a young man many years ago I used to explore this area and would find many underground holes, shafts and rooms which have now been sealed...More

Easy access to Devonport via the ferry from Queen Street, not so easy up the hill to the North Head Military Reserve but worth the effort ! Excellent all round views would have made this position an important military installation. Research before you travel will...More

This place impressed me for a different reason than most people write about: in a lot of countries, they'd clean up all the tunnels, put lights in, dress it up with fake soldiers and guns, and charge admission. Not here. It's free and left in...More

I can't wait to get back here with my kids (and a torch). There are loads of tunnels and unexpected hidden places to explore, wonderful views across the harbour, city, Rangitoto and the Heads to check out, and interesting history to swot up on. It...More

I spent a day in Devonport, discovering its natural beauty and charm. The North Head Historic Reserve is a must-see. The panoramic views are breath-taking! You can spend hours just walking, sitting, gazing, and pinching yourself! Nice 30 minute stroll from the ferry.

A steep climb from Cheltenham beach where we parked provides you with great views of Auckland and Devonport and in the opposite direction out to sea. Then on to the historic tunnels and the disappearing gun emplacements, informative information signs worthy of a read. Some...More

Sorry for the delay answering. It is a bit of a steep walk up, but there is car access. Beautiful views from the top so well worth the effort and time either way.
