This is a very nice gallery in an interesting old (for NZ) building. There is a good collection of NZ art plus some older European art. I went on the tour. Pricey entrance fee.

We discovered that the Gallery has recently introduced a new charging system which discriminates against international visitors (25 $NZ). This is rather a lot, and there is no indication of what you will be able to see for you money.

This is perhaps one of the best art galleries of its size. I didn't have time for the special exhibition, but the permanent content could be enjoyed in well under 2 hours. While there are a few international/foreign pieces, this is very much a NZ...More

I'd been to this gallery about ten years ago and remember liking it then. On this visit I was shocked to be asked for $20 entrance fee as a non New Zealander. I had previously checked 'Toi o Tamaki' on the internet and there had...More

This is an art gallery in a major city, but not the National Gallery. We walked about the gallery looking at everything we could. The exhibit of images of Maori chiefs and notable individuals of the mid to lat 19th Century was impressive and compelling....More

The Banksy exhibition at this venue was brilliant, lots of atmosphere, comfy seating at good vantage points to enable a quiet contemplation of the work. Lovely staff. All in all a very positive experience.

After reading many reviews I expected the gallery to be really excellent and yet most of it ended up being sub par . Some of the exhibits were very primitive and childish and others just not worth the $20 entrance fee.

Nice collection, and well curated. A bit busy the way we visited (a weekday), but still enough space for enjoyment of the art on display. The special exhibitions added spice and diversity. All in all well worth the time invested. By the way, take time...More

There is a gallery of older style paintings that you see in English art galleries but generally focuses on modern and Maori art
