Heathcote was once a psychiatic centre serving the South of the River area. These days it is a centre for the arts, with a museum explaining mental health in days gone by. The gallery often has interesting exhibitions. Heathcote has an expansive view of the Swan River. It has a picnic ground, which is often crowded n summer. Finging parking is not always easy in peak periods.

Away from the centre and on a lovely day this was a nice place to lose a couple of hours. Recommended

Heathcote was once a psychiatric institution and some relics from the past remain. It now hosts artistic exhibitions. Heathcote has one of the best views over the Swan and Canning Rivers. It is a much-loved picnic spot. Try and get there early, parking is limited

The Heathcote Museum and Gallery hosts exhibitions by local artists. The exhibition I saw yesterday was quite intriguing. It is best described as contemporary art. The Gallery is easy to find, just follow the signs. By the way, the exhibition of artifacts dating from the era when Heathcote was a mental hospital is interesting. We've come a long way in 50 years, thank goodness.

The combined Museum and Art Gallery entrance is located a bit further into the complex, on your left, just before you hit the restaurant. It's a reasonable display space, with the Museum occupying a few rooms on the right and the Art Gallery occupying the remainder of the building. The historical artifacts and information displayed are interesting, while the revolving exhibition art gallery displays can be good at times. The current 'mind matter' exhibition was okay, I preferred a previous visit when we met an artist in residence (by chance) during the 'parallels of place' exhibition; she explained the interesting concept behind her exhibit. Worth stopping by if you're already spending time in the precinct.

Heathcote Cultural Precinct is on the site of the former Heathcote Hospital, a former psychiatric hospital. The structures on the site are well-built -- they were intended to last forever. There is a small museum in Swan House, which illustrates the history of the hospital. The associated art gallery is a good display space, with lots of light. At the moment, the exhibition on show is "Untitled -- The Prisoner and Andy Quilty." It runs until 10 June 2018. Exhibitions change regularly. The current exhibition is best described as contemporary art, with black and white drawings, found art and so on. Entry to the gallery is gratis.
