We first came here on A-Day, having just landed in Perth, a fab place to watch the fireworks, especially the spectacular ones over the water. And the next day we enjoyed a great meander thorough the park, beside the river.
What a lovely asset to the city, and so central too

In May 2024 my wife and I travelled to Perth, Western Australia to attend a National Conference being held at the Hyatt Regency in Adelaide Street, East Perth. We chose to stay nearby in a studio apartment in Fraser Suites ( also in Adelaide Street (4 minutes walk away).
We had a free day in Perth on the day before the Conference commenced, so we decided we would enjoy a day in the Perth CBD (Central Business District). We decided we would walk rather than catch a bus as there is more to see when walking. We chose a most delightful walk along Riverside Drive in front of the vast green space of Langley Park (900 metres long by 100 metres wide) which runs parallel with the beautiful Swan River. Riverside Drive is a favourite for bicyclists and there is a public walkway parallel to Riverside Drive along the edge of the Swan River for walkers. Riverside Drive is most scenic thanks to the avenue of tall palm trees along its length. Forming a most spectacular backdrop for the huge green space are the many apartments and high rise buildings. These buildings give the Park a modern, contemporary look.
For our walk we entered Riverside Drive from Plain Street, East Perth and travelled the entire 900 metre length of Langley Park to Victoria Street, Perth, then continued along Riverside Drive until turning into Barrack Street at the beautifully modern designed Perth Bell Tower. Along the way we passed the Western Australian Rowing Club building. This is an interesting large wooden structure that juts over the Swan River’s edge sitting over the water on low stumps. Our walking journey continued up Barrack Street, passing the ornate Supreme Court building until we reached Wellington Street where we turned left to get to the historic Perth Royal Hotel, our lunch spot on the corner in William Street. What a truly delightful way for us to get to the Perth CBD by utilising the very best of Langley Park.
Langley Park was created by reclaiming land from the Swan River between 1921 to 1935, to provide open space near the city. A pioneer of civil aviation in WA, Major Norman Brearley used the park as an airstrip in the 1920s. Because of its immense dimensions the green space has been used over the years for all sorts of carnivals and entertainment. Among many uses for the Park, it has been used for the annual City of Perth Skyworks fireworks show on Australia Day; has been a regular site for Cirque du Soleil when in Perth; has been the venue for many important visiting shows brought to Perth and Langley Park also hosted the 2019 WMF (World Mini Football Federation) World Cup. Indeed, Langley Park is a magnificent asset for the Perth central business district.
What really made the walk along Riverside Drive and along Langley Park’s length so special was the Swan River. Nothing beats a River City and Perth is one of the best. There was rowing and sailing activity on the River while we walked and we even espied an unusual very wet sea bird drying itself off by spreading and flapping its large wings. That alone made the trip worthwhile. The South Perth buildings added to the idyllic scene by forming a great backdrop for the Swan River.
So next time you are in Perth why not go down to Langley Park and consider enjoying a walk along the walkway beside Riverside Drive. We guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Langley Park is a large open grassed area located between the Perth CBD and the Swan River. It's like NYC's Central Park, it provides breathing space for the people of Perth. For many years, Langley Park was well-known as a venue for amateur sport.

This is a lovely park and even a better promenade for a long stroll along the waterfront.
While the park isn't that interesting on its own merit, the cormorants flying and walking through it are just fantastic.

This nice open green space between the city and the river near Elizabeth Quay seemed under used. A long wide grassy area with a children’s play area and close to all the city amenities had hardly anyone in it, the four days we passed through it. A shame really as it was clean, well maintained and easy to reach.

Reclaimed land from the Swan river, rectangular in shape at a very cenral location in Perth used for sports and events. Green as polders are in Holland, but at what cost? To keep the grass green quite an effort must be made on a daily basis. Over the last decade the authorities have made an effort to make space for native vegetation. Perhaps they could have a look at Langley park as well.

We were surprised to be told on the HoHo bus that this park which runs along Riverside Drive had been created by reclaiming land from the adjacent Swan River between 1921 and 1935.
The apparent reason was to give the people of Perth an open space which was close to the city and it’s great to see that it is still being kept in good shape for that purpose.
