- Jessica HFlorida284 contributionsBring blankets and cushions & enjoy films under the starsIt was really fun to see a movie in this historic cinema - it had great atmosphere. The chairs are deck chair-style, and a cushion or pillow goes a long way towards making them more comfy. Evenings can be chilly, so bring blankets for your legs, too. They sell drinks (alcohol and soda), as well as candy, popcorn and icecream.Visited July 2023Traveled soloWritten July 9, 2023
- meski4Victoria, Australia44 contributionsDon’t miss it!We absolutely love this outdoor cinema and have seen a movie on all 3 of our holidays in Broome. It has a fascinating history and the uniqueness of this outdoor venue ensures that you’ll have a great night. The canvas deck chairs are very comfortable and make sure to grab a choc top ice cream! Be generous with the insect repellent and take a jumper as it can cool down during the evening.Visited July 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 26, 2023

Worth the latest releases. Be mindful of flight path for early planes but then this adds to experience.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 24, 2023
- MadamJosephineMelbourne, Australia1,311 contributionsBook a taxi for after the show if you are staying at Cable Beach or out of town..We went last night, it's a great way to see a movie under the stars. We went to the 6.15pm session, another movie started at 8.30pm. Seats are comfortable but if you can take a cushion along then that's even better. The big issue is that Broome no longer has a Nightrider bus service, it was cancelled in June 2023, so if you stay at Cable Beach or outside the city a taxi is your only option after dark. There is no Uber and very few taxi's, the service is shocking, we booked a cab and waited more than 30 minutes. We had thought to get dinner after the movie but the restaurants were all closed at 8.30pm. We think Broome is dying, this is our 4th visit at least and we wont be coming back again. All the good coffee shops like Zoo keepers at Cable Beach have closed - its a brewery now that opens at Noon. Pity as once a town starts to die it gets worse.Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 24, 2023
- GLORE X3 contributionsReally lovely experience to enjoy such an iconic venueIt is really beautiful to appreciate such a famous location, but you should bring extra padding because the seats do become uncomfortable after some time. Gold class it is not! Additionally, depending on the season, it might become a little chilly in the nights. It is like going back in time and is definitely worth include on the schedule.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 15, 2023

Great experiance and a must do while in Broome
As it’s fully open you get a nice breeze on a warm night . Few bugs but the spray is free
Take a beach towel or pillow if you want to soften up the deck chairs

The world’s oldest outdoor movie theater dating back to 1916 is in Broome, Australia. Sun Picture Theater has a sign posted saying it is a 2004 Guinness record holder and the world’s oldest open-air museum still in use after 100 years. Built in 1916 by a pearling master, the first screened talking movie was “Monte Carlo” in 1933. The cinema is known as a picture garden because it has a main building with undercover seating, deckchairs outdoors and a grassy lawn to watch a movie. A sign notes Japanese-descent people were allowed to sit on the left side, pearling masters in the center, Filipinos and Koepangers on the side and Aboriginal people in the back. Movies were shown three times a week. Each movie opened with “God Save the Queen”, the national anthem. Tours are offered but not available the day we visited so had to be content reading the signs posted near the entrance. Three stars because we were not able to see interior.

Heard so much about it, walk past it and didn't think much of it. Looked dilapidated and run down, but had to try it out. And we didn't regret it, venue inside is very well maintained and overall was a great experience in a venue with so much history. Was great to wash it down with a choc bomb.

Nice to watch a movie under the stars. Planes flying over add a bit of something special. Mosquito repellent is provided and is a must. Many people brought pillows for their deck chair. Reasonably comfortable without. Only two downsides, snack and wine bar closes 5 minutes after the movie starts and so if you decide you need something later it’s not an option. Staff disappear after the start. We had a group of local teenagers who had no interest in the movie and no usher to control them.
