Neighborhood: Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

- Stewarts Vacation1,035 contributionsVisit later in the dayWe visited mid-morning and found the entrance archways, decor and architecture interesting. However, there was no vibe as many of the shops/restaurants were not open yet. Probably best to visit later in the day and plan to have a meal at one of the many restaurants.Visited March 2023Written April 1, 2023
- Jeffry bEssendon, Australia14,153 contributionsChinatown hosts many eateriesChinatown remains a Chinese enclave in the heart of Melbourne. Apart from the Chinese Museum, it hosts many eateries, in varying price ranges. Diners can get lunch for $20 at the Shanghai Dumpling House in Tattersalls Lane. At the other end of the spectrum, the Flower Drum in Market Lane is said to be the best Chinese restaurant in Australia, with prices to match. Chinatown was hard hit by Covid, but it is bouncing back. By the way, don't over-order, you can always order more.Visited March 2023Traveled with friendsWritten April 7, 2023

- Travelove5811,338 contributionsA Chinatown that is no different from any other streets hereIts just like most places in Melbourne with a mix of restaurants, shops & even a church - spread along 2 straight stretches of street. Obviously there are more Chinese restaurants here, but also Korean, Japanese, Indonesian. KMart has a big store here, housef within a small mall. Really, nothing distinctive to differentiate it from any normal street. However the surrounding streets/road offers lots of nice shops/dining.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 29, 2023

A yum cha restaurant in little Bourke St - a pot of Chinese tea ($3.50pp) 2 serves of dim sum (only 3 pieces in each) and 1 serve of sticky rice - total bill $43 !! This is outrageous price gouging at its worst. How pathetic, goodbye little Bourke street forever

Melbourne’s Chinatown is easily accessible. It is basically an Asian food street with nothing much to see honestly. All there are are asian restaurants.

Chinatown locates in the heart of Melbourne. There are numerous Chinese characteristic food shops with reasonable prices and cheap shops there. Can have leisure time to walk around.

Is Chinatown and nearby attractions in Melbourne CBD (eg Flinders) more crowded on a weekend or weekday?
Stewarts Vacation

I would say that all Melbourne attractions are more busy on weekends. We went to Chinatown on a week day in the morning and it was deserted. Chinatown is more busy in the evenings when all of the restaurants are open. Flinders was busy and very crowded, but that was over Labour Weekend and the Moomba festival was on! I imagine the station area is always busy as it is a major hub.

Is there any gluten free restaurants in Chinatown?
Seymour J
Melbourne, Australia82 contributions
I strolled around this morning on my way to work and I did not see any restaurants advertising gluten free offerings. I looked at a few menus that were in windows and saw nothing of a gluten free nature
This does not mean that there are no gluten free restaurants in Chinatown Melbourne, but they are certainly not obvious an a 15 minute visit
