Neighborhood: Lygon Street
If you want real parmesan, cut from the block, grated over your pasta with a twist of style, this is the place. Until recently, this neighbourhood was home to the notorious ‘Carlton Crew,’ a pseudo mafia who started their day with a local espresso. They are gone, but the espresso still runs strong in this Little Italy which has something for everyone. Starched white tablecloths, candles, pizza the way they do it "back home" and maybe even a bit of amore. The number of gelato choices will leave you in a state of indecision and wide footpaths, big awnings and a sea of packed tables makes this al fresco dining experience a continental buzz. Even if you’re not eating, it’s worth the stroll just for the people-watching, which, of course, is an Italian tradition.

Good range of meats but lacking that smoked overload. Large platters to share and all enjoyed dishes but needed sauces.

Lygon St is known for its authentic pizza and gelato. Lygon St is called "Little Italy," it's a diverse range of restaurants, take your choice. The historic University Cafe launched Melbourne's first espresso machine. It serves some of Lygon St's best traditional Italian cuisine. The southern end of Lygon St is more Asian oriented.

Lygon Street is in the heart of Carlton, Melbourne's Little Italy. A whole range of cafes and restaurants serve authentic regional food. King and Godfrey, an upmarket restaurant, is an institution in itself. The best way to experience. what Lygon Street has to offer to take the tram and walk down the street; get a pizza and a coffee, if you like. The other end of Lygon Street is dominated by Asian eateries these days.

A neighbourhood within Melbourne that buzzes with food opportunities... appetising aromas of Italian food entice you to explore it's delightful restaurants... and like Italy, they spill into the street... the buzz of conversation, laughter, animated faces... this epitomises what makes this area unique in a city that is full of hidden pleasure.
It runs north–south through the inner northern suburbs of Melbourne... it's an area that epitomises hospitality and warmth of feeling. If you are visiting the city... this should be on your list to visit.. and at this time of the year there are large crackers decorating it's streetscape for Christmas.

There's lots to see in Lygon Street. The street's Italian heritage is obvious. King & Godfrey has great home-style Italian cooking, despite its Anglophone name. It also has Peroni, Italy's favorite beer, on tap. And who could resist a late-night cocktail at Johnny's Green Room, a roof-top bar in the heart of Lygon St? It's been the hangout for generations of Melbourne night-owls. Now that Covid has gone, Lygon St is back to its old buoyant self.

Lygon Street is very Melbourne - the people, the shops, the restaurants, the bookshops, the cinemas - Cinema Nova. It’s easy to find a good place to eat down here - just follow the crowds. We ate at Tiamo and found the food great and affordable. Loved the energy of the staff, very quick, helpful and friendly. Loads of pizza places that would suit families or large groups and heaps of gelato places to choose from. Again, we went to the one with the biggest line and were not disappointed. Probably the best part was strolling down the street. The people around are quite diverse, we appreciated some of the stylishly dressed people that appeared to be locals. Reminds me of being in Italy where people dress well to stroll a piazza. The night was cold but our restaurant had outdoor heating so we were happy to be amongst the vibe of the street. Melbourne Must Do.

Lydon Street is the heart of Melbourne's vibant Italian community, full of Italian restaurants and cafes. Best way to get there is to take the tran along Elgin St. The bottom end of Lygon St is full of Asian restaurants. Lygon St also houses Readings Bookshop and Readings Kids, two of the city's best-loved bookshops. If you walk down Lygon St, you will find much to tempt you. It's best to walk, you never know what you will find. Brunetti is famous for its authentic Italian coffee and delicious cakes.

I arranged to meet a friend at Brunetti; the normally bustling coffee shop was emprty. We were told Brunetti had been designated a Covid "hot spot" and they were only doing take out coffee; so we walked down Lygon St and found a bench to enjoy our coffee. We chatted for an hour'; the passing traffic was limited. There is no doubt Lygon St will bounce back, as it always does, but although the lockdown has been lifted, people are still wary of being out in public places.

We recently visited Lygon Street hoping to enjoy our time there just like we had during our previous visits. Unfortunately we could not recognise the place! Fewer visitors, fewer cafes and restaurants open and too many closed. What was on offer did not look very appealing. Perhaps we will revisit next time we travel to Melbourne.

Ideally yes you will need a myki but it would be an easy walk from the end of the free tram zone to Lygon St. about a 10 minute walk

Hope on the circle tram its free. you get off at the royal exhibition building and carlton gardrns in Rathdowne st then look for Queensbury st. Walk a short distance to next corner and your in Lygon. Or take the normal tram up Swanston and hop of at Queensbury but you will need a myki card once out of the free zone. Enjoy. Remember in the evening they're lots of good enticements such as free wine etc. To get you in. And of course there's Brunetti in the shopping mall.

A little bit late to respond to you know but anybody else reading this section should try Papa Ginos. Its authentic & tasty Italian came recommended by the locals.
The ambiance of the place screams traditional Italian restaurant and the food tastes just as traditional.
