About
In the hilly countryside of Djursland, Gammel Estrup Manor stands with its red walls and high towers. The history of the manor can be traced back to the 1300's, and for 600 years - until 1926 - it was owned by the same family. For generations the manor was the setting for the life of the family and its wealth - with beautiful art objects, a great number of employees, and presentable surroundings. All year round Gammel Estrup Manor offers activities and exhibitions on life at the Danish manors. The elegant halls, the big kitchen, the baroque garden with the Orangeries, and the surrounding cultivated landscape all give us an insight into the life of high and low througout the times. There is a play area in connection with the baroque garden of the museum. You may enjoy your packed lunch in one of the Orangeries or at the open air benches and tables. You are also welcome to picnic on the lawns or buy your launch at Restaurant The Old Stable. Dogs on a leash are welcome in the garden.

Really nice place to visit! We were 2 parents and 2 kids (4 and 5 y.old) and was the from 10.00 to 17.00 and yet didn’t see everything! Several playgrounds and activities kept our small trolls happy.

Thank you very much for the great review! The entrance ticket gives acces to both Gammel Estrup The Danish Manor & Estate Museum and our neighbouring museum The Green Museum, so there is always a lot to see and discover for both children and adults.

Make your choice eæwhen you arrive: The Castle or the farming museum - Both will take a lot of time. I went for the castle castle first, and that is imho the best choice. Also visit the black smith and the park.

This museum is remarkable with its well preserved rooms of the old castle of Gl. Estrup, being home to several noble families over the years. If you have read the Danish history of how the royalty ruled in earlier centuries, and how the people close to the king lived, this is the place to go. The exhibitions are all well explained with texts in both Danish and English. A visit to the garden is also to be recommended, and the museum shop has a good selection of books and gifts.

Dear Torger B
Thank you for the great review!
The Danish noble family Scheel lived at Gammel Estrup for about 600 years, and we try to tell the story about this insanely rich familiy and the manor house culture, they represent. Inside the main building you can visit a variety of rooms and halls decorated and furnished in different styles from different historic periods. Outside there are historical gardens as well as kitchen garden and the forresters cottage, where you can see how the manor workers lived a hundred years ago.
Best, Marie

The museum provides an insight into the history and daily lives of successive generations of a Danish noble family. The ornate rooms and exhibits throughout the manor, the lush green garden and apple orchard, actors in period costumes going about in the manor doing their daily work brought the manor back to life in its heyday. Can spend a whole day here. Free parking!

We were lucky to have visited on the day when a special festival was staged at the manor. Apart from the Manor Museum exhibits and the usual performances like Capella singing in the chapel, singing in one of the rooms, make-up for the Countess in the chamber, fencing practice, canon firing etc, there were vendors in period costumes selling sausages and pancakes cooked on open fire, handicrafts and bread etc in the courtyard. The gardens are lovely. Pity we were short on time and did not explore the lovely grounds of the manor.

Dear Firewoodren
Thank you for the great review. It sounds like you visited us, when we had the 18th century festival in june :-). This is an annual festival where you can see both peasants and craftsmen, noblemen and noble women bringing the 18th century to life :-).
In 2020 the festival will be held at June 20-21.
Best, Marie

The manor museum is located in an authentic manor house. If you know a little bit of history, it is truly fascinating: first to study 18th century gentry lifestyle (first floor), and then proceed to 19th century lifestyle (second floor).
The museum is of quality similar to French castle museums in "Val de Loire".
Next door there is an agricultural museum - the ticket is valid for both museums -, worth visiting, but there are scores of similar agricultural museums - both in Denmark and scattered throughout Europe.

Dear ovemadsen. Thank you very much for the positive review. We are trying to show life for both noblemen and their servants through 400 years. It is truly a joy for us, when we hear from visitors who get the idea, and love the interiors as much as we do :-).

It's a really lovely place with two interesting museums and a lovely cafe.
When I was there it was winter, really cold and holiday. The manor was not as impressing as some of the castles around the country but still nice to look around. The agricultural museum was really good for all generations. So fun walking around and watch the changes during time.
I have no doubt that the area and gardens around the manor is beautiful in summertime! Overall a nice place..
AND the staff in the cafe was just sooo nice. Lovely food and a really good service.
