About
The Welcome Wall is actually part of the Maritime Museum but deserves to be a tourist attraction in its own right. It stands separate from the Museum, in the open air on Darling Harbour. It's free of charge, unlike the Museum and is a record of the Immigration History with stories and diary extracts from the first convict ships right up to the current day. A fascinating attraction but because it's officially part of the Museum gets forgotten about in tourist brochures.

The area

Neighborhood: Darling Harbour
The original docklands of Darling Harbour have been transformed into a tourist mecca with entertainment for the whole family. Cockle Bay Wharf offers dining options from budget to upscale and million dollar views of the harbour. Young crowds gather on weekends for nightlife that ranges from salsa clubs to Dj’s. Families can visit the Chinese Gardens of Friendship or the Sydney Aquarium, one of the largest in the world. The Sydney Maritime Museum and the IMAX theatre are also popular attractions. The Harbourside Shopping Centre is a site unto itself, with hundreds of shops, restaurants and bars. On Saturdays in the summer, the city puts on a spectacular fireworks show along the harbour's shore and there are plenty of other free events during the year - Darling Harbour Fiesta, VIVID’s light installations and the Sydney Festival, just to name a few.

Noticed the Welcome Wall as we disembarked the ferry at Darling Harbour. It records the names and pays tribute to migrants who have arrived from 200 countries and called Australia home. Over 30,000 names are recorded on the panels. The Wall was of interest to my wife, her parents arrived from England in 1948 and their names are inscribed on the panels adjacent the Maritime Museum in Fremantle.

I have visited a few times now to see my nan and pops name. I love the reminder that we are here because of the brave decisions on the names on that wall.
***SAVE YOURSELF THE TIME SEARCHING FOR A NAME, GO AND ASK THE FRONT DESK INSIDE THE MARITIME MUSEUM. I got extremely sunburnt searing, my bad.

My parents and I came to Australia by ship from Italy after WW2 as Migrant Refugees and settled in Melbourne's West. I think there is a lack of recognition, appreciation and acknowledgement of these Post War migrants who worked so hard, bought with them the best of foods, culture, style, class and skills - my parents being part of this group who arrived here with nothing but a wooden crate and much courage. So I am so pleased to have my family name on the Welcome Wall in Sydney even though we live in Melbourne which is said to be the most European city in Australia thanks to us migrants - and has nothing to thank or acknowledge us - yet! Thank you Sydney and the Maritime Museum for this wonderful Welcome Wall.

My family immigrated to Australia in 1970 from Bremer haven in Germany. We have our names inscribed on the welcome wall and proudly call Australia our home. It was good to visit the wall and see the many names inscribed and people walking up and down the path in search of names. It is a great tribute and honours Migrants and their contributuin to the cultural diversity in Australia. You can still register for a fee and have your story included on the computerised welcome wall kiosk located in the museum foyer. It is part of history and nicely displayed for everyone to see for generations to come. Worth a look if interested.

It's a nice tribute that is the first thing you see as you get off the ferry at Pyrmont Bay in Darling Harbour just beside the Maritime Museum. It's a worthy point of interest while in the area.

The Welcome Wall is a relatively new addition to Darling Harbour (OK, 2 years now), and it's relevance is interesting, given that anyone can request their ancestor names be added to the wall - for a fee.

Nice to see, however don't expect a huge history lesson from visiting here.

Of personal interest as my fiance's father arrived from Italy in 1951 and the kids all got together a few years ago for a special birthday and got his name added to the wall. As part of rhis the stories of the immigrants are also loaded on the Maritime Museum computers which can be searched.
Anyway, it will be a great thing for future generations to trace their roots in the years to come.
