This is an interesting old Anglican church with quite a modest interior. It is not as elaborate as the Roman Catholic St Mary's across the road but worth a visit.

This is the oldest church in Australia. It was funded in 1819. Convicts were forced to go to church on Sunday for a couple of hours. Now people come for free and enjoy the church. It has lots of beautiful stained-glass windows, some historical and...More

Francis Greenway, who was transported and sentenced to 14 years for forgery in England was the architect for this church. Built with red bricks in 1819 by convict labor who lived in the nearby Hyde Park Barracks, this building was designed to be a courthouse,...More

It is across the street from St. Mary's cathedral. It has some interesting marbles, some dedicated to people who died violently. It is Georgian style and was built by convicts. If you are around, just spent some minutes here. It could be part of a...More

After visiting the Hyde Park barracks with its history of brutality, entering St James was the right remedy. There was an organist practicing during our visit and it was memorable. This is such a sanctuary in the city. Wonderful and made you spend time contemplating.

So good to see that we have some beautiful churches in Australia that are small but still architecturally grand. Beautiful stained glass windows and designed by Francis Greenway.

Finally visited this church after passing it numerous times when going about in the city. It is a building that sits quietly and un-noticed amongst the bustle of a busy city. Yet, reading the program of events that are happening in the church indicates a...More

St James’ Church is definitely worth a visit given its context in Australian history. It was constructed between 1819 and 1824 by convict labor and is the oldest church building in the City of Sydney. It has been in continuous since February 1824. Worth taking...More

We spotted this church on our way to St. Mary's Cathedral so we decided to pop in. It is quite lovely inside and is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
