Visit the temple first. Offer prayers to Lord Arunachaleswara and Mother Unnamulaiamman and then proceed to perform the Girivalam. It's seeking their blessings before performing the Girivalam. Though performing the Girivalam on Full moon nights and few other auspicious days / times is considered good. The Girivalam can be performed on any day with its own benefit.
I have performed Girivalam 7 times so far on various occasions - Full moon night, new moon night, Maha Shivaratri, after Karthigai Deepam and other days.
Each Girivalam has been an enriching experience and begins as a new chapter.
Please visit the Ashta Lingam shrines during the Girivalam. These shrines are open throughout the night on full moon nights and few other occasions. On normal days, the shrines follow a normal temple open -close time schedule.
If you are planning to perform Girivalam on a full moon night, plan your trip and accommodation in advance. You can reach Tiruvannamalai by noon, check in and freshen up and reach the temple around 3.30 PM and go for darshan. After darshan, you can take a brief break with refreshments and then proceed to perform the Girivalam.
During Chitra Pournami, Karthigai Deepam, Maha Shivaratri and certain other occasions the crowds will be huge, Girivalam during these times requires a different schedule.
Either way, the best time to perform Girivalam is early in the morning or late evening/night.
