My hubby is a huge whisky drinker (I am not) so I googled distilleries in Brittany on a whim and found this gem. We went for a tour (in English) and he tasted pretty much every product they had. Even as a non-whisky drinker, I found the tour enjoyable and the Pommeau and Cider were delicious. He loved the whisky and we bought several bottles to enjoy at home. A great few hours spent if you are in the area even if to just learn about the history of cider and brandy in the area.

It’s a nice simple distillery if nothing particularly special. The Apple based aperitifs are decent enough, as is the buck wheat whisky, but scotch isn’t under threat just yet. Nice tour on a damp afternoon but the sale prices are similar to regular whisky prices so although they are different, are they different enough? It’s a pleasant enough tour and you won’t get over excited.

You must visit this distillery if you are nearby. They produce the only buckwheat whiskey in the world! You are invited to try anything they produce and they produce several whiskeys, ciders, brandy and mead.

We visited the Distillerie des Menhirs and were lucky enough to have the woman who with her husband in the 1980s reinvented the family local craft industry of distilling into at first producers of Pommeau, hard cider and eventually whiskey. She was very instructive and explained the nuances of the different types of whisky. We had a glimpse into the distilling room and the warehouse where the larges oak barrels of the precious stuff is left to age. It was a very nice impromptu stop and we were very glad we found this place.

We were actually looking for the menhirs and found the distillery so it would have been rude not to try their wares. Delightful lady was very helpful in explaining how the whisky is made. I do not like Scotch (sorry, something wrong with my taste buds I know - too refined?) but my wife does and she enjoyed it enough to splash out on one for home and another for a present for a fellow whisky drinker. We also bought some very potable cider. A great find.
