Thieves & Steel Day Tour from Belfast

This corner of Ireland has a wealth of experiences, activities and history, and we’ve selected the best to give you a very different view of Northern Ireland! You’ll travel through history, starting in the 5th century in the walled town of Carrickfergus, then you’ll meet the giants of Victorian steam power in picture-postcard Whitehead, and finish off on the Gobbins Cliff Path to get your heart racing.

You’ll experience it all through the eyes of local people: your driver, and your onboard guide and storyteller. They’re local, professionally trained and very experienced, but what you’ll love most about them is their warmth and welcoming spirit.

The storyteller is a unique part of the Thieves & Steel Tour – as you travel, they’ll delight you with tales of fairies, giants and local folklore. It’s all part of the magic of this tour: the day combines ethereal myths and legends with the power of castles, engines and steel walkways. It’s Ireland as you’ve never seen it before.

I had a berry and lime drizzle cake made by the owner, Sinead Mone. It was very good. They have won contests with their dessert creations. The place has had a new coat of paint on the outside. The staff wear combinations of visors and face coverings. The area for tables was expanded to make more space, and some tall clear dividers put in place. They have a one way system to take guests in the front and out the French doors. At the moment they’re open from 10am to 3pm from Monday to Saturday. The people who work here seem to really enjoy being there. I can’t help but be happy to be visiting.

I am fussy about my “flat white” coffees (first tried in Brisbane 20 years ago alongside their “long black” coffees). Bank House has it nailed. Most places have no idea how to make them and give you a cappuccino with less milk... Missed this place during “lockdown”. Also has a great deli (try the chicken liver parfait with pink peppercorns...) and a classy gift shop with some unique local craft items. Did I mention the paintings of local artists for sale? Relax here after your Blackhead path walk!

You can visit The Bank House for many different reasons. Many enjoy the live folk music on Friday afternoons, or the more rock-and-roll musicians who play here on Wednesdays. I like to check out the changing art exhibitions around the walls. There is a great deli with many local food delicacies and marvellous home-made soup choices. When I'm too busy to stay I often call in for a takeaway soup and sandwich. Many people here make use of the free wifi. The garden area is dog and bicycle friendly. If you're lucky you might be here on some special occasion. It hosted poetry performances in the 2018 Music in Mind festival. Aaron Leach, the Islandmagee blacksmith was here for Victorian Street Fair Day in November. Crowds are fascinated to see someone shaping hot metal, and he's happy to entertain questions. The Bank House was also the venue where the Queen's representative gave the local Brighter Whitehead group the Queen's Award for Volunteering; the highest such award for voluntary work. There are Toast the Coast tours which choose The Bank House as their starting point because to food and the welcome are a great way to kick off an unforgettable journey. On every other routine day the place provides a famous welcome to visitors. Pop in and find out for yourself.
