Hidden little treasure

A beautiful, quiet and unpretentious nature park with info centre and walking area. The info centre at the entrance has well-labelled endemic trees and plants and a nice fern and orchid collection. If you drive further along the (un-paved) road into the forest area, you get to another parking lot at the entrance of the forest that is being rehabilitated. There are walkways around this area but it feels wonderfully remote. Not a single other tourist! It is not marketed much and I think it has not really been discovered. For nature lovers or people who want to see incredibly rare endemic plants it is a wonderful place to stop for a bit!

Unfortunately the road up to this Nature walk is not very good for ordinary cars. There is a good car park at the top and it is worth walking away from the tarmac roads onto the small, narrow paths. There are not enough signs or labels on the trees and shrubs and it is a pity that one doesn't really know what one is looking at - this would add interest for most people. There is a good view from a viewing point which is easy to reach. There are also areas where you can partake of a snack or drink.

An interesting little find

Monvert is an arboretum that we came across this nature park after we completed the Plaine Sophie walk over the other side of the reservoir.

There is a basic visitor's centre which is located quite some way before the actual nature park. Driving from the visitor's centre, you might wonder if you are going in the right direction. You pass a couple of textile factories on the right and carry on down a bit of a rugged and windy road. At some point, you'll reach a car park and the trail then begins.

There are a couple of walks to choose from and we only had time to complete one of them, although they do intersect a few times. The forest is full of indigenous trees and crosses some marshy areas. It's not too difficult but meanders around and up and down in some places. It's largely uncovered so you may need some sunscreen, and don't forget the mosquito spray.

There is a raised viewpoint at the end of the walk which is worth checking out.

What is probably the nicest thing about the walk, like most of the hiking trails and unlike other tourist attractions in Mauritius, is that you're unlikely to come across many tourists.
