Once you get there you have a quiet, secluded beach but no better than many in this area. The problem is you have to cross a river on the first beach and walk across 400 metres of boulders before walking along a rough path lined with tree roots. Dangerous and not worth it. If you fancy yourself as Edmund Hillary, you can climb to the lookout, but you need to be really fit and agile. It’s the most difficult “path” I’ve ever come across. Beware.

The walk over to get onto New Chums beach did not take us long, maybe 20 minutes. A bit of rock hopping and trekking across the first section to get to the path. The trail then winds up and over. Never too crazy steep, unless opting to scramble up for the higher view over the beach. We did this as we were leaving and would highly recommend stopping for the higher view if up for the scramble. So lovely to see the crescent beach from above. The water was so clear we could see Manta Rays and a shark in the water. We went about two hours before low tide and stayed about 2 after. It didn’t take too long to get to the first entrance onto the sand of the beach itself. It took me about 20 minutes to walk down the length of the beach and 20 minutes back. There were a good amount of trees along the beach to find shady spots for breaks from the sun. This was among my most anticipated beaches to visit in Coromandel and NZ in general and it lived up to the hype and anticipation. It truly is a special gem. There are many lovely beaches along the Coromandel, this one if you are up for the trek off the more beaten path. There were a good amount of people while we were there in middle of December. But it never felt crowded. And if you walked down to the far end you likely could have a larger space all to yourself. Definitely less crowded than Hot Water Beach, Hahei, etc (though we found each of those also lovely). The Coromandel is stunning and well worth a day or a few of beach relaxing and playing!

You park your car for free at the end of the road as instructed by sat nav, there is a toilet close by. Be aware, this is the last toilet until you return, there is no services on the beach. Walk over a beach, cross a stream and then you start to walk on rocks. For a long time. Around the corner a slippery muddy path can be found and then finally after 30-40 minutes you reach paradise. Hardly any people are there, great swim. And the the same on the way back. So wear trainers, and be aware of the tide, unless you feel like swimming back with valuables on top of your head along the rocks

The beach is OK but there are a lot of other beaches New Zealand just as good or better. The problem is accessibility; there is a long, tricky approach hike to get to the beach and limited parking at the trailhead. The beach can only be accessed at low tide and even the you have to ford a tidal stream; once there you have limited time me before the tide comes in. After fording the stream, you have to teeter across a rounded boulder field and the go through a muddy, slippery first track. Once there we found the water to be too cold for swimming

We finally made it to New Chums Beach after a number of earlier attempts thwarted by high tide or a lack of sufficient time.
This time round the weather was perfect and the water level very low, allowing us to cross the creek without even getting wet feet.
New Chums is a short walk out to the headland and across a saddle (maybe 30 m up and down) and felt like a world all on its own with its long swept beach and no one in sight. Great place for a dip in summer (a bit cool at the end of May). There is room for picnics and for a long walk along the beach, looking for shells, rocks and marine animals.
A couple of hints:
- stay right close to the bush line once you crossed the creek, as you can minimise having to rock hop (a rather slow process)
- if there has been rain on previous days, take a pair of good shoes with you as the track can get a bit swampy.
- No toilets, rubbish bins or other civilised structures at the beach. Carry out what you carry in.

Nice 40 min walk to a secluded beach. Perfect for a swim to cool down. A bit challenging at first, walking over sea stones.

The walk up to the lookout is incredible, not for the faint at heart and maybe not after a good rain either. It's not accessible other than by foot. No Dogs allowed as there are nesting dotterels in the area. Native Pohutukawa trees cover the cliff faces with no houses or humans insight. Its stunning pink rocks and slightly pink sand are just what you need after about a 30 min walk over the saddle of the headlands.

Beautiful spot. There is ample parking at Whangapoua, and a public toilet. You start by walking over Whangapoua beach, crossing a stream, then walking over rocks, a bush path with beautiful pohutakawa trees. After passing the lookout path turn off a sandy path through Nikau palms and you reach this gorgeous beach.
It’s worth wearing trainers or other secure shoes due to the stones, tree roots, and lookout climb - take them off to go through the stream near the start though.
It took us around 40 minutes with our 6 year old, and another 40 minutes back, so take a backpack with water and a snack. There are no toilets or running water at the beach, so plan ahead.
I wouldn’t recommend swimming on this beach with children, unless perhaps they’re very confident swimmers. It gets deep quickly, and waves are strong, so could knock children over. Save the swim for after, at Whangapoua beach with its shallow lagoon and gentle waves.
Even with travel restrictions keeping overseas tourists away, with good weather and the holiday period it was pretty busy, so I’d recommend going early (allowing for tides).

I’m conflicted in writing this review because I love how it feels like a hidden gem!

It’s a bit of a climb to get there (walk alongside the cliff, at the top of the rocks, for the easiest way around the bay), but you get to walk through stunning forest.

The beach has plenty of beautiful trees to lie and read beneath, and is good for swimming. Definitely worth a drive to get there.

Possibly the best beach in the world.
