The Hardanger Folk Museum (founded in 1911). The main museum with its exhibition and administration building is at Utne, 200 metres from the ferry landing. Changing art and cultural history exhibitions throughout the year. Permanent exhibitions: Folk costumes and accessories and Folk Music. In the open-air museum we have reconstructed a traditional cluster farm in which the oldest building is a medieval log house with a central open fire. The museum also has an old general store, cotter's cottage and wooden ski factory. The boathouse by the sea houses several traditional Hardanger boats. There is a museum shop where you can buy arts and crafts, books/ booklets, local history items and folk music. The museum is located by a fruit orchard. The Hardanger Folk Museum has branches with open-air museums and collections at Bu near Brimnes and Skredhaugen near Lofthus. School and guide service.

This museum has both indoor and outdoor exhibitions. Outdoor old buildings - indoor the Hardangerfele-exibition and the traditional costumes which includes over one thousend different bodice inserts! The staff was very friendly and could answer all our questions. The cafe served coffee and lapper.

There are many outdoor museums in Norway, and this is one of the best. In addition, the indoor displays of traditional costumes and Hardanger fiddles are outstanding. Before viewing the many old buildings outside, we borrowed a guidebook from the receptionist, and it explained everything...More

We found this place to be a wonderful, relaxed history lesson. Would advise an early arrival for best parking options and less crowds. The exhibits are hands on and the staff are very friendly and informative. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

Small but impressive folkmuseum. Staff is really friendly and answer all your questions. Beautiful and interesting exhibition, also on the typical Hardanger violin.

This Open-Air museum is interesting, but not a "must see". The outdoor cabins depicting the life and hardships of days by by was well presented. The indoor displays were uninteresting and dull. Our time would have been much better spent staying back at the grand...More

Utne is a quiet village and this is the main attraction. Nicely laid out and much bigger than it appears at first sight. The cottages and houses are set into the hillside with tremendous views of the ferry coming in across the fjord. Save your...More

Never having traveled in Scandanavia before, we found the cultural history fascinating. This museum is well-maintained and very interesting. Just wish there had been people in period costumes demonstrating activities/crafts .
