This beautiful church has got stunning views of the city. It has a large courtyard too and a museum. We spent some time just enjoying the views and the peaceful tranquil courtyard and church. There is a hidden grotto just across the road which was also nice to see. Definitely a must see when in Mellieha!

Its very easy to miss this place, there's one small sign pointing down towards some steps.
But once you get down its a beautiful little shrine.
I'm not religious but it definitely has a calming feel about it. There's letters and prayers on the walls, I started to read a few but a lot of them were very sad and private so I quickly stopped.
Worth going in if youre walking by, you can be in and out in a few minutes.

This grotto is easily missed but its on the main road from the village to the bay opposite the main church. There are 78 steps down to the grotto so its not suitable for anyone dodgy on their feet, Once inside there is a small place of worship, so be respectful and letters and photos from parishioners seeking divine help. One plus point is that it is free to visit.

The exterior is so promising that we were really happy to go inside! Unfortunately, as is often the case in Malta, the church was closed at 2 p.m. and did not reopen until 5 p.m.!!!!!
It was one more to add to our experiences of closed places of worship on the Island!
Definitely between those whose entry is paid and the others which are closed!!!!
One of our disappointments in Malta!

Take steps down from the large church, cross the road and follow another set of steps and you will find this shrine cut in the limestone. White statue of Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus. Many miraculous interventions were attributed to the Lady of the Grotto and it became famous.

Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to visit the church but spent a wonderful half hour in the crypt across the street.
Located deep underground we were met by the scent and glow of the candles, the sound of spring water flowing through and a woman gently whispering her prayers, there are notes and mementoes left for loved ones adorning the walls.
The whole experience was so spiritual and uplifting and gave us a moment of clarity and peacefulness.

Don't be fooled into thinking that the entrance down a hundred or so steps, will short cut you down the hill to Melleiha - it won't and you'll have to walk all the way up them again just to find yourself back on the same steep road once more.

Go anyway. It's quite haunting.

It's a natural spring grotto, small, intimate and covered with loving sentiments from peoples throughout the world praying for miracles and leaving momentoes of loved ones.

Touching stuff.

Were passing so went down the hundred or so steps. Not much to see if you aren't religious - nothing of any artistic or historic merit. Then back up the steps...

Climb down a long staircase to visit the shrine and say a prayer or light a candle for someone or just take a minute to meditate.
