I went on the river trek with my 12 years old son, my guides were Rocco and Marion. We had a fantastic day, the activity was great, the place beautiful and the guides friendly, extremely competent and sincerely good people... Could not wish any better. Prices were more than fair, actually extremely cheap if you come from an expensive location. It's a great way to discover southern Italy of the beaten track with people who know and love their region.

We participated in an excursion to the Cacciaviola canyon in August and it was above our expectations. We could experience new techniques of moving through the rocks, under a close eye of our guides. We were given the necessary equipment and the guides ensured that it was properly applied. The trail starts in a beautiful narrow canyon, where water sculpted for thousands of years fantastic shapes in the rocks, and now it offers a refreshing shade and a magnificent views on numerous waterfalls. In this part we mainly moved sliding on zip lines. Then the canyon becomes wider and the water almost disappears, going under the surface. In that part we moved more often through the rocks in the dry riverbed, like if it was a sort of dry canyoning. Overall, a great experience! This canyon is so beautiful that it deserves a special protection and recognition. A good thing is that being so wild it naturally doesn't allow for a mass tourism, and also the guides are very concerned about protecting it from careless actions of the participants, so hopefully it will stay so untouched still for a long. The Matese escursioni organizes also other types of excursions, less or more difficult, also in winter. We'll definitely try them whenever we are in the area! Now some practical tips: in theory you can make this excursion with a pair of trainers shoes. However note that the rocks are often very slippery and it's really much better to wear a pair of ankle-protecting hiking shoes. If you don't have such, you can rent them, but be sure to book in advance, otherwise no guarantee that they will have your size available. For foreigners: I'm not sure if the guides speak English. But you can always get translations from someone else in the group. Make sure to pack at least 0.5l of water / person and some food (you can get some pizza snacks at the bar next to the meeting point). And finally, enjoy the rides!! :)))
