Heard about the offerings of mid sea floating in kovalam (covelong) beach tamil nadu, A pack of friends headed to the beach where we found a covelong surfing institute offers that with local fishermen.

8 Members maximum in a catamaran, all set with few hundred bucks each. We were thrilled with the life jacket tied on us! (they were maintained well also :) )
its our first ride in sea and also on high tides (windy, we were lucky that they accepted) the katumaram (catamaran in english) was sailing over water piercing the tides a roller coaster feel with water splasing all over. Since there were much tides they advised us not to leave the rope. a long rope which 8 of us to hols and floated. it was a amazing feel of floating.
float, sleep, fight not to get much salt water in mouth and nose.

if anyone required contact can message me. always ready to help:)

Note:
close your mouth on tides! if sea sick get with empty stomach.
have enough water carried along with eateries (if needed)

There is public toilets with bathing facilities (we didnt used so no idea)
no locker facility available.

It was quiet, clean, peaceful and beautiful.
Well looked after by the Taj with life guards.
Only thing not too level so must be careful about the receding tide.
At times fish get washed ashore so be careful

Visited this beach twice as it is located a little outside the city. It is not as crowded as other beaches in the city

It is a picturesque beach and also has options for water sports. Should definitely visit for Chennai folks as it is better than city beaches like Marina, Beesant Nagar etc

The beach is clean however best time to visit this beach is evening. At that time you can find fishermen catching fish and if you are lucky, they can allow you to see and touch the fish.

Have not seen a better private beach in India. Very well maintained and other than kids making noises its very calm and a sight to a sore eye. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to getaway from the city for a couple of days or more.

Had enjoyed beach during our stay earlier this month. The beach is not deep and very safe. Kids had no problem enjoying in the water. The water was bit colder early morning and warm during the day.

Lovely to walk along the shore, quite rough to enter the sea and many tiny crabs on the sand. But great to relax and enjoy the fresh sea breeze.

Visited this place on a weekend with friends, is about 20-25 KMS from chennai city centre on the east coast road which connects chennai with Pondicherry. It's a nice quite beach good for outing with family and friends. If you are a seafood lover then it's the place to be, the road leading to beach has numerous sea food restaurants. You can even buy fresh fish which is just bought in by the local fishermen and get it cleaned on the beach itself. Nice place to visit.

Covelong or ( Kovalam in Tamil ) is first and foremost a fisherman's beach, Travellers must note that it is split into two; the private beach maintained by Vivanta by Taj and the public beach.

The Public beach is very similar to the Marina, albeit much shorter and narrower. A bigger difference is the active movement of fishing boats and the hauling of seafood.

The beach is not crowded, but a good amount of space is taken up by the nets and fishing boats ( it is their beach after all ) and you will see a lot fresh and not so fresh fish and even the occasional unfortunate Turtle scattered around the beach. there is also a large amount of litter which are probably from the boats. the Beach is suitable for someone wanting a less crowded affair than Marina or Besant.

The private beach, however is a completely different affair, ( and I suspect about which most of the reviews are of ) catering to the guests of the resort, it is beautiful, pristine and maintained well. it provides all the amenities that you would expect from the Taj Group.

To summarise, Covelong will provide a very different experience based on whether you are the guest of the resort or you are just a visitor to the beach. but it is still worth a hour or two before you move on to other fine attractions like the Crocodile park and the surfing clubs which are very nearby.

A serene place to go to. Should go here with family, i am sure would turn out to be an ultimate place. Having your own vehicle is a must. Not many things to eat around, so make sure you are carrying enough food and water.
