An small but old parish, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Shrine, colloquially called Covelong Church, has quite a large number of staunch members. While most of the services are conducted in the local language i.e Tamil, we were fortunate to make it to the only English language service at 11.30 am, one sunny Sunday morning. While the interior is quite plain, the exterior is quite impressive and it's spire can be seen from quite a distance.

This historical landmark has its origins around 1770 -80, when it’s foundation was laid by Rev. Fr Carmalata.Consequent to his death the construction which had remained incomplete was taken up by Sir John D’ Monte between 1800 & 1808. This traditional Parish was dedicated to the church of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, which marked its bi-centenary in 2008.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel's church is a short walk down the Kovalam beach, located in a tourist village along the east coast road around 30 kms away from the Chennai city. Our Lady of Mount Carmel's statue is behind the altar of the shrine .
This small catholic church plays host to the Christian community around the beach and in the fishing village nearby.

Apparently between 1770 AD - 1780, Rev. Fr. Carmelita a missionary from the Madras-Mylapore Archdiocese had started building this church in Kovalam. The 53 feet tall bell tower is a landmark of this beautiful church.

It is believed that the construction of "The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Shrine, Covelong" started in between 1770-1780 AD and took about 30 years to complete the construction. The story commonly believed behind the completion of construction is that Our Lady appeared to Sir John D' Monte and promisted to heal his wife Mary D' Monte If he builds a church in honour of Our Lady and Sir John Mote constructed the church as instructed by Our Lady at Covelong. The church we see today (it might have been renovated later) is beautifully constructed and lot of devotees visit the church especially during the feast on 16th July every year.

This is a superb Catholic Church built on the shore of the Bay of Bengal. The church celebrated its Bi-centenary in 2008. A very beautiful Church and praying here in silence is great.
