The complete name of this church is Colegiata de Santa Maria del Mercado. It is an impressive church for such a small town, but we have to go back to the sixteenth century to try to imagine the importance of Berlanga then. It is open from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 16:00 to 17:00 and the entry fee is 2.00 euros. There are guided visits on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. A collegiate church is a church where the daily office of worship is maintained by a college of canons; a non-monastic or "secular" community of clergy, organised as a self-governing corporate body, which may be presided over by a dean or provost. In its governance and religious observance a collegiate church is similar to a cathedral, although a collegiate church is not the seat of a bishop and has no diocesan responsibilities. This church is a hall church, designed to enable as manhy people as possible to see the altar. This concept was in important shift away from monastic churches where services were for the clergy or the brethren. It was built in 1525-30 for the constable of Castilla, who owned the castle. Outside, a plaque honours Fray Tomás de Berlanga (d. 1551), discoverer in 1535 of the Galapagos Islands. His tomb is in the church, as well as a mummified black cayman that the good bishop brought from the Galápagos. It is known as "el lagarto".
