An architectural manifesto, Villa Cavrois, the work of architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, a figure of the modernist school, was designed and built in Croix between 1929 and 1932 for Paul Cavrois, a textile industrialist from the Nord department, and his family. Listed as a historical monument in 1990 thanks to citizen mobilisation, and acquired by the State in 2001, the huge restoration project implemented in 2003 by the DRAC Nord-Pas-de Calais and then taken over by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux in 2008 will be completed in 2015.

Beautifully restored 1930s mansion. Mallet-Stevens designed the villa Cavrois down to the last interior detail as a modernist château. Its imposing proportions (a 60 metre long façade, 2,800 m² of flooring) and its distribution in two symmetrical wings, is a modernist take on aristocratic residences...More

I was around 5 years before it was opened to the public. I am glad I went back. This building is stunning! Care for details is breathtaking. Furniture is nice but as the rooms are very big, it looks a bit empty. I have seen/visited...More

Hardly ever have I come across such a beautifully restored monument. It is worth making a tour to Roubaix to see this masterpiece of modern architecture and dream about the possibility of living in such a wonderful place.

This villa was built in the Modernist style and restored after years of neglect and occupation. The style and grandeur of it has to be seen to be believed, a most interesting visit. The grounds only enhance the building.

We have been kicked out 1hour before the house closes with no explanation. They have a very interesting movie that was unfortunately switched off before the end. Gave feedback but was received with lots of argumentative anger by the young staff. Very rude and make...More

This modernist (not art deco) villa is a wonder. It's enormous and must surely represent a high point in lluxury iving in the early 1930s, with huge rooms, many bathrooms (including the largest you are ever likely to see), lots of cutting edge technology for...More

A feast for the eyes. Beautifully restored art deco home. Excellent guide on Ipad that helps you relive its rich history. Unfortunately not much furniture on display but all very well and tastefully done. Between this and the nearby Piscine in Roubaix, any architecture fan...More

Justice was rendered to this amazing work of avant-garde architecture created in the 30's. A place not to miss if you're traveling in the area. But do not bring kids as silence is imposed and strictly enforced indoor and outdoor! Kind of sad to think...More

Follow the signs to find it easily on the edge of town. The Villa Cavrois was built as a very modern house and after falling into disrepair it has recently been renovated to an extremely high standard. Just one room has been left and that's...More
