The trek is tough, the reward Erta Ale is priceless. Sleeping near the edge of a live volcano, deep down seeing it bubbling and burning - no words can describe this sight and feel. Go - it is a must.

See other reviews for descriptions of the spectacular sites. But be ready to pay way too much money - prices seem to be government-set, and/or there's some other price-setting going on, leading to a complete lack of incentives to provide decent services. Tourists are concentrated...More

Did this hike early Feb 2018. If you have a relatively medium level of fitness, are used to hiking and are under the age of 66, this is by far a very easy hike. The grade is not steep at all, the path is good...More

We went up in the evening to be able to see it by night, slept near the crater and walked down with the first light. It's easier as it's colder and the lava is wonderful by night.

The volcano is easy to trek and not like other volcanoes. Lava rocks are all over the place. Not that spectacular like other volcanoes in the world.Red molten lava can be seen at night. The trek is done at night as it is hot there.

Without a doubt, the lava lake atop Erta Ale was one of the most remarkable things I've ever seen anywhere. Picture a real life Mordor from Lord of the Rings, without all of the evil. My husband and I disagree as to whether seeing it...More

One of the most amazing natural sites on the planet! The world's oldest active lava lake. How active? It was closed for three months at the beginning of 2017 due to an eruption that opened up several new vents around the top of the mountain....More
