If you love books and want to learn more about Iceland’s history visit Flateyri and the Old Bookstore! Wonderful! You can see the family home which is a “living museum” for a small fee and buy new and secondhand books in the bookstore. The secondhand books are priced by weight! We enjoyed our visit! Takk fyrir!

This is really interesting place but it’s a bit hidden. Not only is this a book store, but it’s an old book store that has preserved its authenticity. As a bonus you can view an apartment of the owner of the book store, it takes you 60-70 years in the past. Very interesting and a must see.

I loved my visit to the old bookstore in Flateyri! It was a really nice surprise as I had not heard anyone discuss it even though I work at a travel agency in Iceland and have been for the last 6 years. You can really dive into the Icelandic culture by visiting with old posters on the walls, souvenirs and day-to-day objects all around! You can even visit the apartment next to the store which was owned by Jón, the founder of the store. Walking around the apartment is like stepping into a time machine that brings you back to the 1950s!

Stopped off on our tour of the Westfjords and spent a very happy half hour looking through the books. Came away with the book of photos by the bookshop owner (who was lovely) and a book by an Icelandic Nobel Prize-winner. Amazing location, and we all enjoyed saying hello to the very friendly cat. Well worth a visit!

What a gem of a place! Great for book lovers and lovers of history. The old apartment had been frozen in time and it is charming. The book store is bursting with books and other interesting goods. Look out for the ledgers showing the accounts of the store over the years, amazing! The current owner is charming too. We bought one of his books which is full of his photographs taken in and around the area - beautiful and a wonderful souvenir of our trip there. Be sure to visit if you are in the area.
