We were very lucky to have this lovely experience. On a very wet day on the way back from Castelluccio we decided to see the frescoes at Fematre. In this apparently deserted little village up the hill off the Terni road just outside Visso the only person we could find turned out to be Mara who looks after the church. She willingly agreed to show us round and explained the history and significance of each fresco in clear and easily understandable Italian. We were told how one part of a fresco depicting the descent to the Inferno had been painted over (by the worst painter in Perugia) because it was too expicit and how frescoes were painted over in time of plague because they were felt to be connected with the disease. At the end we discovered that she was in a hurry to be elsewhere so we were doubly grateful, even though it mean we couldn't linger. It was amazing to see such beautiful work preserved in this remote spot. In the earthquake of 1997 the church and the frescoes were damaged, but following repair and restoration work it is possible to the glory of these works which cover most of the surface of the walls. The ancient and beautiful church stands just outside the little village.

Peaceful, crowd less place, no lines, no reservation. Unrivaled beautiful serie of frescoes of Umbrian school painted around the 1528-1553. The entire complex that originally included even a small convent was destroyed or severely damaged by the frequent earthquakes that are registered in this area at high level seismic risk.
