This church is well worth visiting with its plague chapel and ancient altar piece. It is quite small and peaceful overlooking the river and with a fascinating history.

The church tower of St. Michael's is the only remaining tower of the old stone walls that once surrounded Bernkastel. Still remains after Louis XIV destroyed the rest. Very interesting history.

We were told that this is the oldest building in Bernkastel and its unique architecture had a double purpose : a place of worship and a defensive tower acting also as a bell tower ! This explains why it looks likes two different buildings !

The imposing 600-year-old tower of the parish church of St. Michael, which contains a wealth of artistic treasures, is one of the most prominent features of the town's landscape and was first mentioned in records in 1177. The church is in the Bernkastel part of...More

You can see the tower of the church from just about anywhere in Bernkastel or Kus. It was very quiet and dim inside. Smelled a bit musty too which added to the feeling that I was inside a very old church.

A Catholic Parish of Bernkastel must have been created before 1017, although the first named Parish Priest was not noted until 1177, with the original Church being completed around 1386, once being surrounded by a Churchyard. This then raises the interesting question as to how...More

A nice little church in which to take a break from a hectic day of sight seeing or shopping. Nice altar piece and organ with a niche for viewing a pieta and lighting a candle.

Inside the church is not that big. Typical tall ceilinh and stained glass windows. Huge tower. Free to get in. Worth having a 5 minute look.

This church is more than 800 years old, and very beautiful. I liked especially the glas paintings. It's worth while to have a look.

Church was beautiful. Bright and inspirational. Be sure to see the painted stations of the cross in the entry foyer and "santus santus" bell on the floor on the left side of the altar. The largest and most unique bell of this type that I...More
