We rode the Harz Steam railway from Wernigerode to the top of the Brocken and back. The scenery was superb, the smell of the smoke and smuts from the steam engine were evocative of childhood. My husband and grandson rode most of the journey standing...More

Loved this journey. Having never been on a steam train before, I was like a dog in a car on a motorway and had my head out the window the whole journey! I took the journey from Wernigerode to Brocken. Saw one reviewer on here...More

We had no real preconceptions when we booked our ticket for the journey from Wernigerode to Brocken. Yes, it is pricey but when you travel halfway around the World you need to drop the frugality sometimes! The journey begins, for most, at Wernigerode Hauptbahnhof though...More

A complete, working steam railway in the 21st century! Although much of the routes is through wooded hills, the twists and turns the tracks take make for a blast from the past as the locos pound up the gradients. The railway is well presented and...More

Maybe it was because the day was dull and I'm not a train fanatic but this ride didn't do anything for me. The journey through pine forests was not scenic at all, apart from the odd clearing. We made two stops on the way but...More

We travelled on a Monday during the Christmas markets period which worked out to be a clever tactic because there were very few people in our carriage going up. Before we left the station the men working in the locomotive were polishing their train. The...More

The local people of the Harz are proud of their steam train and with good reason! An hour and a half journey on the train from Wernigerode took us through beautiful pine forests; the steam from the train giving the surrounding landscape a mystical feel...More

Yes, i’d definitly recommend you to stay in werningerode, it’s a small beautiful town. I think the weather in september is perfect, not to warm, not to cold. The railways are open the whole day, i think.
