I must say at the outset that I find the previous review by Chris S baffling. I'm not sure what he thought he was going to find in a medieval hilltop village - amusement arcades perhaps? For those of us with simpler tastes I can...More

Not particularly interesting. Not really sure why other reviewers so enthusiastic. Only cafe was open (early September). Good views, but only of Mazamet.

This remote hillside village was simply marvellous to visit for a short time on our return from the nearby lake. The history of the town and the views over the valley are breath taking, a must see visit.

This lovely small ancient village is in the beautiful Montaigne Noir about 15 minutes from the centre of Mazamet in the SW of France. In the village is the great little Taverne de Hautpoul where on a terrace overlooking the valley towards Mazamet you can...More

While staying at Mazamet we visited Hautpoul, which is a medieval village. It is well worth the effort and to have a drink or a bite to eat at the Tavern is highly recommended.

It's supposed to be the most wonderful village in France ... Sorry but not. It's nice sure and it's quite romantic but nothing special. Parking is difficult.

What a wonderful and beautiful place to visit! I enjoyed the stonework and architecture the most and my wife the spring flowers and gardens....I highly recommend this place. ENJOY!

Had no idea what to expect and nearly didn't go. Really glad we did. 13th Century medieval village. You can only drive up so far and then walk a good climbing walk with views that are worth the effort. Beautiful outdoor shrine at the top.

We drove here from Carcassonne and took the first turn for Hautpoul, so ended up in the small car park at the top next to the statue. We walked down the path and quickly came to the tavern, where the owner was kind enough to...More

This is a real Cathar gem and far more interesting than - for example - Carcassonne which is Catharism "reinvented". Another amazing construction on a seemingly impossible site, in common with many other Cathar constructions, it sits above modern Mazamet, which grew from Hautpoul, and...More
