Albaster Works for Tour and Purchases
Oct 2019
We enjoyed our visit to see how Alabaster is formed. Very talented artisans will give you a demonstration. Afterwards you have an opportunity to purchase something small or very large. A little something for everyone. We have a very nice bud vase .

Lovely family owned and run alabaster workshop
Oct 2019
We visited as part of an arranged tour in Volterra and were personally guided around the alabaster workshop by Sr. Rossi himself. Such a lovely knowledgeable and generous man sharing his family history and passion of alabaster. Maestro Franco demonstrated to us how to turn alabaster on a lathe with such ease it felt that anyone could do it...not!
The shop attached sells all manner of alabaster gifts and art work to suit most pockets.
A must when in Volterra.😀

A glimpse into Matt Dillon and the Queen of the Netherlands

A glimpse into the past sculptural excellence that is Italy, the impossibility of finding young people interested in continuing dying traditions notwithstanding the opportunity to see visitors from elsewhere including the royal houses of Netherlands!
Calcium sulphate aka Alabaster , ,perhaps we live in a world where no one wants decorative yet functional objects anymore

Something a bit different
Sep 2019
We knew nothing about alabaster but there's apparently a long history of carving it in this area of Italy. This visit was part of our tour. We entered the workshops where we were given a short talk by the enthusiastic owner. This was followed by a demonstration making a small pot from a block of alabaster which took about 5 minutes - I bought one home as a souvenir (15 euros). There was white dusk everywhere - I'm surprised the workers weren't wearing masks. Then we went into the showroom and shop area where there were some beautiful things to admire/purchase..

Never Knew Much About Alabaster
May 2019 • Couples
I could tell you it was white, but that was it. On our trip to Volterra, our guide helped us get into the workshop to watch products being made. It really was interesting. And the items they produce - wow, just lovely. The variety of artistic and practical pieces is great. Because it can be made very translucent, the variety of lamps were beautiful and fascinating. Definitely worth the stop in here.

Warm Family Atmosphere
Oct 2018 • Friends
The shop is tucked away.....this is not something you will just run into on the Main Street. Tucked away in a corner. I was glad our guide knew enough to take us here. Mr. Rossi's greetings were warm and inviting from the beginning. He was quick to point out that this is the real stuff!! There are inexpensive copies out there, but this is the real deal!! He took us into the workshop, where one of the craftsman showed us on the lathe, how to work the alabaster into something special. I wonder if these guys develop lung problems?? No mask, no protective eye wear? Really a special place to visit, and learn about this wonderful ancient handicraft. You will feel like you have known this family for years. And owning something made by their family is definitely a treasure to have in your home! I was visiting with a friend, but this tour would be enjoyed by families with children as well. I can see groups of teenagers loving this too. Really a cool place.

Some beautiful things to tempt you
Aug 2018 • Couples
We always try to return home with some souvenirs of our stay and, given that Italy is known for its marble and alabaster, it seemed appropriate to take home a small item or two from this place. We didn't actually get to see the items being made, but did get to see the workshops which were memorable simply for the vast heaps of dust all over the place. I do have allergy problems and I'm sure if I had been watching the men working, I would have had to wear a mask. Perhaps this is the normal procedure anyway! We were very pleased to see some of the items "part made" and the shop itself was effectively a large showroom of all the finished products. Excellent quality and a pleasing gift for someone back home - or for yourself, of course!

Interesting to learn about alibaster

We were interested by the exhibits and the demonstration of how alabaster is lathed to make vases. Felt that the shop prices were a bit high and the group leader was pressured to force everyone to participate in the tour.

Interesting little shop with a nice tour
May 2017 • Friends
This appears to be another "standard stop" for the cruise line tours. The owner is a very entertain man with a fun story--is it real, who knows? It does not matter! He has a number of nice pieces for sale at very high prices and a huge number of alabaster trinkets for sale. He sells a lot more of the latter than the former!

The high point is that you get to see the nodules of alabaster that you have seen in pictures.

Other than Mr. Rossi, the staff appears to be bored to death with the tourists. They are of little help in purchasing items. The shop is in an old historic structure. You do not have to spend too much time here--spend it on walking the city, which is beautiful!
