The Gargano promontory rock has been heavily shaped by the wind and the sea water, giving birth to many caves visible only from the sea. There are different boat companies offering half-day boat trips to the caves (Le Grotte), and stopping on unspoilt beaches for a bath. The price is 15€ per person. I particularly enjoyed this trip, caves are really impressive because of their size and beauty, and there is no other way to see them. You can look for boat companies at the port, or close to the Pizzo Munno beach where they offer a free shuttle service to the port. We have also seen some people with canoes visiting the caves close to the city.

We had a great day trip out on the boat seeing the amazing coast line with the grotto's and old wooden fishing structures. The driver was so skilful at getting such a big boat into the grottos for us to see the insides. We had a 2 hour break on a beautiful beach which was a great way to break up the boat trip.

My wife and I did the boat trip on 24th July 2014. Everything was perfect, the scenery, the boat trip, the staff, location, and weather. The caves are amazing and great that the boat goes in to the caves. There is a 3 hour stop off at a beach, to do as you please. We hired a kayak and went around the caves more. The beach is nice and restaurant/cafes are good. We would recommend this trip and the Gargano area for a great holiday. Thanks to all staff.

The best way to view the Gargano is by sea and this trip on an open top boat where you can appreciate the geography and contrasts of this ancient land. And an open top boat also enables you to dart into the many beautiful grottos that make up the rocky coastline The tour starts out from the port at Rodi. There is a ticket office in one of the shops and you head to the end of the port to board the boats. The boat sets out from Rodi and and heads south along the coast past the seaside towns of San Menaio, Peschici and Vieste. Along the way you past several trabucchi, which are the old fishing platforms that were used to catch fish. These landmarks are now locally protected. You also will see the old medieval watch towers that were used to guard against invasion from across the Adriatic. The boat briefly stops for people to admire the Pizzomunno at Vieste, a tall, white rock that stands alone on the beach, before heading further south where the coastline of calcareous rocks that jut out on the sea open up into caves and grottos that enable the open top boat to enter. There are so many small inlets and caves and each are unique. Light enters some of the caves at different points and creates an array of effects, while others remain dark and mysterious to their size and shape. On the trip we took our boat surprised some naturists enjoying the sun and tranquility with our noisy boat and clicking cameras. The boat continues down to the Baia di Campi where there is a tranquil beach with small pebbles where you can take a swim and relax for a few hours before the boat is ready to pick you up and return you to Rodi. The water is clear and perfect for snorkeling as there are plenty of fish to see. There is a restaurant and a cafe there as well should you wish to buy lunch there. It was a warm (but not hot), calm day when we went but you could probably do it in less tranquil weather. Remember a hat and sunscreen as there is no protection from the sun except when you are briefly in the caves. And don't forget a bottle of water.
