Great place to spend a morning
Jun 2021
We spent a morning in this park at the top of the hill in Liperi. It is a collection of historic sites that includes a great museum, the castle, the Cattedrale di San Bartolomeo and the Acropoli. It is well marked and has good descriptive signage.

Wonderful collection

The museum collection is absolutely fantastic and very big ! You would need hours to enjoy everything properly. There is not a lot of explanations but it is a great travel in time (some pieces are 7500 years old), if you are interested in archeology. This was a very nice surprise, don't miss it if you stay a few days on the island !

A must cultural place.

The collection runs from bronze age to renascense.
It should be nice to have access to an app. Where to learn more about the artifacts.
The catalogue, long and detailed, is not available which is understandable considering the size of collection.
Volcanology section read closed to the public.
The architecture of the structure is rich.

Several museums (one ticket to enter all) take you on a time trip through the past of the region. Beautiful and huge collection of well preserved Greek pottery.

A marvelous and most enlightening way to spend a few hours or more. We had such a wonderful time discovering, exploring and learning about the special island of Lipari.

Worth the Walk
Oct 2019
We only visited the external parts of the museum, being a bit pushed for time. Nevertheless, with the benefit of our guide we were fascinated by the external excavations which were clearly labeled in Italian and English.
There are stunning views on the way up to the museum and at the top when you get there. Well worth doing and with more time it was apparent that the internal room would be worthy of further investigation. The little town next to the harbour is also a delight.

strong in prehistory
May 2019
The culturally most important sight In Lipari and the adjacent islands is the Museo Archeaologico Regionale Eoliano in the 'Castello di Lipari', the about 60m high hill with fortifications from the Spanish period. There are several open excavations there, mainly of antique cemeteries.

The museum itself is distributed over several buildings, the entrance ticket (6€) again has to bought in a separate house (without exhibits). Photography without flash is allowed in the rooms. There are plenty of information boards in Italian and English, many so detailed that it would take ages to read it all.

Thanks to its obsidian, the most valuable material for tools, the Eolian Islands were of great interest already to the neolithic man. Thus the whole prehistorical period is probably the most important section of the museum. Its finds are located in the grandest edifice, the former Bishop's Palace, where a visit also begins.

To start one has to go the upper floor first with its 6 rooms about the Neolithic Period. Next comes the ground floor with finds from the Bronze Period and the two cultures of Ausonia, which ended 850 BC. After that comes a 'dead period' until the arrival 580 BC of Greeks from Knidos and Rhodes, followed by the Romans as of 252 BC.

In the next building are finds from the Bronze Age villages on Filicudi and Panarea. The third museum-house has more from the Greco-Roman period, also from Milazzo across in Sicily. In one room are shown objects from shipwrecks from antiquity till the Spanish-French War in the 17th century. In this building are also toilets.

There was so much to see here, very impressive. We spent a good couple of hours here and really enjoyed it. Most of the display had descriptions in English too which helped. Well organised place

unexpected surprise
Sep 2019
we had about an hour and a half between arriving in Lipari and taking the cruise, so we popped over the the castle and museum.

I had read that the museum contained a nice display of Neolithic to Bronze age (and beyond!) artifacts as well as exhibits on vulcanology, but was not prepared for the quality and quantity of the artifacts themselves !

The signage was well written in English, providing context to the items displayed. Lipari was inhabited from 5000 BC ! and many relics have been recovered and are on display at the museum, including funerary objects.

The section on vulcanology covers not just the Aeolian Islands, but volcanoes around the world.

It is well worth spending at least an hour here.
