Located in Quinson, in the heart of the Verdon, the Gorges du Verdon Museum of Prehistory presents the results of archaeological digs carried out in the Verdon for over 50 years. A trip back in time for all with its circuit of alternating scenes from everyday life in prehistoric times, interactive displays and original archaelogical artefacts. Designed by the architect Norman Foster, the museum is one of the biggest Museums of Prehistory in Europe.

We live a couple of hours eat of Quinson and it was because our grandson was visiting that we decided to see the museum. In one word: disappointed. Considerable effort has been made to create a stunning visit but it falls flat on important details....More

A great deal of knowledge from this place, and a beautiful exhibition on the caves. One bad note for me is the entry price a bit too expensive for the content.

The spectacular building was designed by Norman Foster to be both ultra modern and add to the ancient atmosphere. The exhibitions inside were well laid out with stunning photographs and videos of the cave system discovered in the 90s, the ancient drawings are easily the...More

This museum catalogues the evolution of man. I could not believe that these fantastic caves full of paintings had been found in the river gorge and that the archaeologists had to survey them and document them and create replicas - and that the actual caves...More

This is a well known museum in the area even though it seems to be in the middle of nowhere - contents are a must see for enthusiasts and the Norman Foster building worth stopping for!

This museum has been established using artifacts found prior to the flooding of some of the Verdon Gorge. It is a major museum, but suffers from unilingualism. All signs are in French only, and the guide's English was poor. One would have expected such a...More

Ten or so TV sets along the exhibition - each showing 5 min clips, on a loop, about prehistory of the area. Interested to see other reviewers also had problems using them - thought we were being a bit thick! Don't think the instructions were...More

This museum is tucked away in a small town near the Verdon gorge. The staff were really friendly and spoke some English. They had tablets which provided an English translation but we found these difficult to use.

Such a great subject and certainly plenty of prehistoric history in the region but this museum is a let-down. Housed in an interesting building designed by Norman Foster, the exhibits are rather dull and dry. Case after case of flints, bones and the odd pot,...More

A stunning brutalist building promised much but the interior is a disappointment. The building is claustrophobic and dreary, the displays dated and most of the exhibits are fake ("replica" in fibre glass). There is nothing to interest younger visitors, and of my children the two-year-old...More
