A real effort has been made to show how this castle might have looked and worked in the time of the Cathars. From the high vantage point you can see for miles across the valley towards Paziols village.

This little jewel gets five stars for the renovation work being carried out on the main structure. More modest in size than its overbearing neighbours Quéribus and Peyrepertuse, Aguilar is a pleasing detour after passing through Tuchan, a slightly weary-looking village at its feet. You're...More

This was Chateau No. 1 on our itinerary of our Cathar Way walk. Strikingly situated, it is well worth the visit. As with all of the Cathar castles there is solid climb up to it - make sure you have plenty of water with you....More

Another amazing Cathar castle. Not quite as good as Peyrepertuse or Cucugnan, but still well worth a visit for the views and the history. As ever its a bit of a climb, but its well pathed and marked, so no dangers.

Excellent castle that doesn't require an extreme climb, as you can drive almost all the way up there. We visited before noon, so before it got really hot, which is the perfect time, as there are also very few visitors. Nice views all around; the...More

They have obviously done quite a bit of work since the last review. There are now two car parks, one above the other. You have to pay 3 euros 50 to go in unless you have the Cathar Castles pass, in which case it is...More

Long winding single track road with a few passing places. The walk up wasn't too bad but probably the least well preserved of the chateaus we visited. A lot of the chateau is in ruins but it is a good view from the top and...More

Chateau d'Aguilar are ruins on the very top of a rock. You must hike a little (15 min) to get up there from the small parking area and entrance but it takes longer than an hour drive from Carcassonne. The roads are picturesque and lonely,...More

Only a short drive form Tuchan the sign posting is poor in places and as you wind through narrow roads in the vineyards you wonder if you took a wrong turn. Someone has kindly written "chateau" in yellow paint with an arrow on the road...More

This was the nearest Cathar stronghold to the Gite we stayed in for our summer holiday. Now rather ruinous, the owners are working hard to preserve it in near original condition with only a few nods towards modern health and safety. An English guidebook was...More

Not sure if it can be visited in winter; it's pretty basic and close to Pyrenees (sometimes snow). Tourist info on Corbieres Sauvages website in French. Better check with tourist office. From Montpellier via coastal highway... More
