A cross between a tower and a castle, this fortification was built as a refuge and lookout point after the initial expulsion of the Moors in 1492 and during the uprisings in the 1500’s. It occupies a dominant position over the village and the old Arab quarter. The walk up is charming and not too strenuous. The castle is full of interesting exhibits on the history of the village, the natural environment, hydrology and economic history. All of the information is in castellano, so you must be practiced to absorb the details, but the views of and from the tower are worth the trip. Open in the summer on Fridays, you otherwise have to call in at the Ayuntamiento to arrange a visit.

We atayed in this lovely small town for a week and enjoyed walks up to the ruined castle to see the lovely views. Coming from Scotland (where we have many beautiful castles) we were disappointed in the castle itself but we enjoyed the walk up and the views of the mountains, countryside and town below.

The castle is not open every day, and was closed the week we were here. However, the walk up to it through the old town, and the views from the top, we wonderful.

This is a 16th Century Castle built on remains of a Moorish Fort. It is am imposing piece of architecture overlooking the mountain Town of Velez De Benaudalla. In traditional style it was built on a very high place as a naturally good defensive position. The Castle itself is in a good state of repair having been renovated. The steps up to the Castle from the Car Park are steep but only about 50 metres (please see photographs attached). It is worth the climb to see the panoramic views of the Town which I hope my photos' show you. Only problem is the Castle is only open on certain days. We went on the wrong day and it was closed but the notice on the door showed it was open on the 15th April 2017. Entry price 2 euros (please see photo). So we were disappointed. That said there is a web address for tourist information, and the views from the Castle base are worth seeing.
