A Palace fit for Kings, built for Prince Bishops Auckland Castle Trust is transforming this 900 year old Bishop’s Palace from an unknown and almost unvisited private dwelling into a vibrant and fascinating visitor experience. Auckland Castle stands apart as the medieval home and hunting lodge of the Prince Bishops of Durham who for centuries were equal in power to the Kings of England. Please note, Auckland Castle is now closed to daily visits for major restoration and redevelopment work until 2018. However we still have many events running throughout the year

You can still visit the grounds and it is lovely for a picnic. The grounds go down to the river and you can look across to Binchester Roman Camp. The castle has a great history and will be well worth visiting next year.

Although building work is in progress, the atmosphere and parklands were well worth the visit. We went back two more times during our three days in Bishop. Loved all the trees in the parkland too.

The castle itself is undergoing serious restoration work, so I'll have to call back another time, but the deer house is quaint and, to my knowledge, unique. essentially, it's a place where the Georgian gentry could picnic whilst watching the deer from close quarters in...More

The castle is currently under construction, expanding sections, unearthing archaeological digs. It looks a little bit of a mess at present but the finished outcome later this year/early next year will give the castle a whole new dimension. A local to the town I've watched...More

I have come here several times over the last 7 years and have never found the Castle open however you can have a good walk around the extensive and beautiful ancient estate. The highlight for me is the 18th century deer pen.
