We had friends with us for a few days and, even though we were born in the area and have returned in retirement, we had not been for a number of years. We enjoyed a walk on the towpath and saw much improvement over the...More

Set off Saturday morning. Walked nearly 7 miles up the canal to Hebden bridge. Wide paths, well cleared of debris so easy to walk along. Lovely views, locks to watch the boat owners and have a seat. Stopped off for tea and cake in Mytholmroyd...More

I’ve been going there for a couple of years. The canal side is pretty much unchanged since the 19th century and there is a narrow boat dock and lock. The walk along the canal is a greenway, complete with the usual wildlife you would find...More

I walk along this stretch of the canal on a regular basis. It is also a great route for runners and bike riders away from the busy roads. There is plenty of wildlife. I spotted a Grey herron on Sunday while walking my dog.

In a way it’s good that there isn’t huge amounts of tourism here, because having this stunning stretch of canal to yourself is incredibly special. There’s an occasional dog walker and cows and sheep, but otherwise it’s just you, the canal and the breathtaking scenery...More

Came through here several times with Maple ( 60ft) in the good old days, and though having to use certain locks at a diagonal, I loved this valley - excellent for a walk. The lockies at the Deep Lock were delightfully chatty

We did have a narrow boat and this was one of our favourite places to moor. The lock is amazing to watch open and close. In summer there was boar trips on the canal. Don't know if every year

I am lucky enough to live in Sowerby Bridge and often go for a walk along the canal. It’s beautiful especially near the canal basin where you can stop off for refreshments, and also watch the canal boats venturing through the locks. A very pleasant...More

I’m fortunate to live only a few miles from Sowerby Bridge. It’s a market town in the Calder Valley in Calderdale. Two rivers and two canals form the heart of this fascinating mill town. The canal has the deepest lock in the country. It’s flower-decked...More
