The present tower on Castle Rock was built in 1888 after the first tower, built by the Tonsberg Maritime Club in 1856, burned to the ground. The original cross from the Church of Our Lady can be seen in the tower. Cato Engers model of the castle Castrum Tunsbergis has been casted in bronze and has it's place close to the tower. Mail dispatched from Castle Rock Tower has its own postmark with a special motif. The tower is 17 m high. There are three royal inscriptions on the tower.

The tower was raised for the 1000 year anniversary for Tønsberg in 1871. It contains information on the history of the castle that once was there. A model shows how the castle worked in the 1200s when church and state fought each other. The view...More

Highest point in Tonsberg and the views from the top of the tower are superb. The tower has nothing to do with the historic fortress but we were lucky to to visit with a guide as the remains of the fortifications and the historare interesting.

It´s a tower. But magnificent both from a distance (lighted up in the evening) and close by for shadow in the summer. This is a rebuild, and close by there is a model of the whole castle. Tønsberg is norways oldest town.

Perhaps the most important landmark in Tønsberg is Slottsfjellet, a tower standing on the hill overlooking the city. It was erected in 1888 as a memorial to Tønsberg Fortress, the old fortress, of which just a few ruins remain today.

An interesting monument that you can visit for free. You can see Tonsberg from up high and there is the tower with the signatures of the kings who visited it by the years.
