What did the people of the past think, believe and know? How did they arrange their lives, their belongings and their knowledge? Take a journey to our house of many wonders; Experience some of Norway's most beautiful stave church portals in our medieval exhibition. Learn about the Norwegian Stone Age people, explore the Egyptian mummies and get an insight into wonderfully diverse cultures from across the World through our ethnographic exhibitions. The Historical museum is also a prime example of Art Nouveau architecture, and the rich embellishments has a unique mix of Norwegian and international elements. We are currently renovating the roof, facade and windows of the Historical Museum; but the museum will be open throughout the renovation period. Closed:1 May, 17 May, 24-26 December, 31 December, 1 January. Norwegian name: Historisk Museum

We visited purely as we received free tickets when we visited the Viking Ship museum It is a fairly small museum and we had hoped to see some Viking history but alas no as this display will not open until Dec 2018 The Arctic display...More

There are 4 floors of exhibits. The ground floor houses collections from the Middle Ages, gold and silver treasures. The ethnographic exhibitions on the 2nd and 4th floors exhibit Egyptian mummies and antique art, African+American+East Asian cultures. Entrance fee is 100kr for adults but can...More

There’s little bit of everything from stone age artefacts to mummies and a coin collection. Overall not very impressive though. Some rooms were closed when I visited.

Free entry with Viking ship museum, which was good as there wasn’t much to see. Very small display about Oslo (geologically), the arctic peoples (using Roald amundsen’s collections!), and miscellaneous artifacts from global regions (high level - nothing too in depth). No Viking stuff (the...More

We went to Oslo to visit Viking ship museum. The 100NOK ticket to the Viking ship museum (kids free) also allows visiting this museum near Karl Johan's gate. Reason for visiting this museum was because it was included in the Viking ship museum ticket but...More

I love museums, but this one was a waste of $16. It felt like most of it was under construction, so I certainly felt ripped off paying full price. It has a number of random exhibits with no connection. The wasn’t any depth in the...More

As a Graduate of Ancient History I knew this museum would have to be visited, for its Egyptian collection and other areas of the ancient world. It was free entry with the ticket to the Viking Ship Museum, which was a nice bonus. Easy to...More

If you buy the Viking Ship museum ticket, you can use it to also come here. We didn't have much time (20mins.) so we went through very quickly. It is a small museum, but worth going to check out. It is easy to get to...More

Visited in the afternoon. Free entry with same day ticket to Viking Ship Museum. Last stop of the 3 museums in a day. Only a small museum. Main reason we came was the mummy exhibit. Something to do on a rainy day
